SENIOR and vulnerable citizens in Cratloe, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Shannon and Sixmilebridge are being gifted treats as part of a festive initiative.

Shannon Garda Station in conjunction with local businesses have come together to provide a helping hand for senior and vulnerable citizens in the area.

Between December 13th and 17th, Shannon Gardaí will be bringing hot meals, a mince pie and a Christmas hamper of essential foods and goodies to show their thanks and appreciation to 159 elderly and vulnerable people living in the area.

Included in the hamper is a Christmas card from Junior and Senior infants pupils from schools within the locality.

Ordinarily, a Christmas event is held by Shannon Garda Station, this initiative has been organised an an alternative to reach out to persons that may be in need of support. “Because they can’t come to us, we’re going to them,” explained Inspector Paul Slattery

By getting young children involved it is hoped to increase community spirit by starting conversations at home which may result in visits to an elderly neighbour, Insp Slattery added. “It has been a tough number of years for all involved but it is hoped that this would provide a smile behind the mask for all who availed of it”.

Insp Slattery said that Shannon Gardaí have already completed simple jobs like switching light-bulbs and doing the shopping for members of the community that have been afraid to venture out due to COVID-19.
