Securing a second senior title has cemented Scariff/Ogonnelloeโ€™s status as โ€œa great team,โ€ defender Susan Vaughan maintained.

By Derek Dormer

It took a replay for Scariff/Ogonnelloe to overcome Truagh/Clonlara but the 2019 county and provincial champions prevailed in a very impressive defensive display that saw corner forward Alva Rodgers collect the player of the game award.

Susan Vaughan didnโ€™t line out for the East Clare sideโ€™s first two games where they defeated Kilkishen/Bodyke and St Josephs Doora/Barefield but returned for round three when they ended Newmarket-on-Fergusโ€™ championship aspirations.

Her presence at wing-back ensured there was strength and physicality, a feature that continued right throughout their campaign.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Susan pinpointed their workrate in the opening quarter when Truagh/Clonlara were dominating as important. โ€œIt was an epic battle again today. Truagh/Clonlara are a fantastic team and to get over the line its pure joy. We were all over the shop in the first fifteen minutes. It felt like we were in a hole and couldn’t get out of it but we kept going. We did the basics right and we had a savage workkrateโ€.

โ€œAisling Corbett came on and nailed frees a hurler wouldn’t nail from 65 yards.. This second title shows it was no fluke two years ago. Winning a second makes you a great team. We had loads of young players today and this will drive Scariff/Ogonelloe on for years to comeโ€.
