A centenary commemoration of the Currakyle Ambush is to take place in Flagmount on Friday.

Sean Moroney and Pat Houlihan’s contributions as part of the sixth battalion of the East Clare Brigade will be marked in a special event at Flagmount Hall on Friday (October 29th) beginning at 8pm.

Initially planned to take place in June, the commemoration has been deferred with members of the East Clare Memorial Committee hopeful of a turnout to rightly honour the two men.

Acclaimed oral historian, Dr Tomás Mac Conmara of Tuamgraney is to present a lecture titled ‘the two who fought two hundred’. A booklet will also be launched at the event.

Pat Hayes is part of the East Clare Memorial Committee, he told The Clare Echo that the area must acknowledge those who played a part in fighting for the country’s freedom. “For the communities of Killanena, Flagmourn and Feakle, the sixth battalion was very much to the fore and involved in the Irish fight for freedom, it is important we acknowledge the contribution of Pat and Sean in their own community this is very important 100 years on.

“It is an important event for our community, the contribution of Pat, Sean and all members were very much part of fight for Irish freedom,” he added.
