Newmarket

A “hazard” has been created for road users outside a supermarket and large primary school in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Installation of barriers were sought by Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) at the junction where the Loughash Rd meets the Ennis Rd on the R458 outside Eurospar and a main access point to Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire in Newmarket-on-Fergus.

Cars parking at the junction are “causing a hazard for road users as they emerge from this junction,” McMahon stated. His proposal was seconded by Cllr PJ Ryan (IND).

An assessment to find the “most appropriate layout and arrangement of bollards required to achieve a successful outcome for this motion” will be completed, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett outlined.

“It is an ongoing problem but it has got worse lately,” Cllr McMahon flagged. “Anyone coming from the shop down right into the village will know that cars consistently park on the right in front of the main Ennis Rd, if you’re going down into the village it makes it very dangerous for cars coming up towards Ennis”.

He added, “It is totally blind and a wide open road, cars tend to accelerate coming out of the village”. Matters have “been aggravated with a very busy school across the way, two soccer pitches and an astro turf with a huge amount of activity seven days a week,” the Newmarket-on-Fergus representative concluded.
