A strong third quarter during which they scored 0-7 without reply helped Tipperary to victory over Clare in the quarter final of the Munster U20 hurling championship on Monday evening.

Tipperary 1-19

Clare 0-12

Venue:Semple Stadium, Thurles

Clare held a four point advantage at the half way mark and were a little unlucky not to have been further ahead at the break.

There really was only one team in this tie in the second half as the defending champions dominated. The half was twenty six minutes old before Clare scored with Cian Galvin converting a free.

The result was sealed when Devon Ryan converted a penalty two minutes from the end after Andrew Ormond was brought to ground by Paddy Donnellan and Jathan McMahon.

Forced to select a team without Inagh-Kilnamona’s Aidan McCarthy (broken thumb) and Kilmaley’s Bradley Higgins(cruciate), Clare were dealt another huge blow in the days leading up to the fixture when team captain and full back Aaron Moloney (Kilmaley) suffered a leg injury which ruled him out of the game.

A further major blow came on match day when the highly rated Shane Meehan was ruled out of the game due to Covid 19 concerns.

Adam Mungovan (Doora-Barefield) and Conner Hegarty (Inagh-Kilnamona) were called into the starting line up in place of Moloney and Meehan.

After playing with the aid of a slight breeze Clare led by four points at half time when the score was 0-10 to 0-6. They were fully deserving of that advantage having come to grips with the threat posed by Tipperary’s Andrew Ormond in the opening ten minutes when he pointed twice and generally caused problems for the Banner defence.

The introduction of Darragh Healy to the Clare defence for the second quarter, tightened up the visitor’s backline. As the game progressed Clare took a grip on proceedings with Cian Galvin operating between midfield and the half backline. He scored 0-4 in that opening half, two coming from open play while Mark Rodgers at full forward, with 0-3 to his credit, caused a lot of problems for the Tipperary defence.

However scores proved very hard to come by for Clare in the second half with only Galvin and Rodgers adding to the side’s tally as the reigning All-Ireland champions 1-13 0-02.
