Criteria for community organisations involved in development on public property which is funded by Clare County Council is to be examined.

It comes following a request by Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) at a recent meeting of the Shannon Municipal District. He sought a review of the criteria applied and that the Council make “specific policy procedures” so that applicants have to consult with the public in the vicinity of the proposal and obtain written consent from senior Council engineers in the District before beginning the project.

Under the Community Support Grant, voluntary groups are aided with funding from the local authority each year. Project assessments are recommended for approval following the input of the Council’s ‘Working Group for the Action Plan for Rural Ireland’ which is comprised of eight councillors and two representatives from each Municipal District.

Director of Rural Development, Leonard Cleary welcomed the tabling of Cllr Flynn’s motion. He outlined that the working group would consider the assessment of future projects in greater detail. He believed the engagement of voluntary groups to such an examination would benefit the process and future development of local projects.

“He sees the merits in what I’ve put forward,” Cllr Flynn replied. Cllr John Crowe (FG) seconded the motion.
