A planned public rally from Save Shannon Airport has been cancelled.

Due to take place on Saturday July 25th in Ennis, Clare TD Michael McNamara (IND), Lahinch hotelier Michael Vaughan and Karen O’Loughlin of SIPTU were announced as confirmed speakers.

Organisers have confirmed to The Clare Echo that the demonstration has been called off following advice from An Garda Síochána with regard to COVID-19 recommendations.

Save Shannon Airport have labelled themselves as “a broad church” of local traders, community groups, tourism groups, trade unions, hoteliers with cross-party political support. They have encouraged individuals attending to bring their flags and banners to the rally.

Dermot Hayes who is among the organisers of Save Shannon Airport revealed that the reaction they had received on the ground was very positive. They were confident over 200 people would attend the rally and with the delaying of Stage 4 in the roadmap of reopening Ireland, outdoor gatherings of such a size are not permitted.

“We need to raise awareness on Shannon Airport. It’s in crisis right now,” he stated. Organisers are hopeful of hosting the rally in late August.
