Fifteen more deaths and 92 new COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the Republic of Ireland with an extra two people diagnosed in Co Clare.

On Saturday, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre was informed that 15 people have died which means there have been 1,533 COVID-19 related deaths in the country.

Health officials have been notified of an additional 92 cases bringing the nation’s total to 24,048. It is the first time since mid-March that the new amount of cases in one day has been lower than 100.

Clare’s total of confirmed cases now stands at 314. Two new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours. Detail on the amount of recovered cases per county has not been provided by the Department of Health.

Data from Thursday’s 23,879 cases state that 7,530 are associated with healthcare workers. 13% of cases have been hospitalised with 389 admitted to ICU. The median age of those diagnosed is 48 while the breakdown is 57% female and 42% male. Community transmission accounts for 60% of cases, close contact accounts for 37% and travel abroad accounts for 3%.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan welcomed the reduction of new daily cases below 100. “While the past nine weeks have been particularly difficult for those cocooning, and for parents with young children, today’s numbers give reassurance that we have all learned and adopted new behaviours of handwashing, respiratory etiquette and social distance that will serve us well as we work together to re-open retail, business and society.”
