Trudy Leyden has become the first Ennis candidate to enter the race for the upcoming General Election.

A prominent activist with Fine Gael, Trudy will be running as an Independent. She had expressed her desire to run under the party banner but the trio of Pat Breen, Joe Carey and Martin Conway, all present Oireachtas members were selected.

For the 2016 General Election, Trudy was a canvasser for Cllr Mary Howard but she will now be knocking on doors seeking votes for herself. She has race relations are the key issue on which her campaign will be based.

Leyden has been the social and inclusion representative for Clare PPN on the Social Development Strategic Policy Committee of Clare County Council. She has a Masters of Arts in Politics and has qualifications in Cultural Studies and Literature.

As well as holding several roles with Fine Gael, Trudy has been secretary of the Quin Community Text Alert Service.

Afghanistan news anchor, Sayed Farid Sanai has been enlisted as Trudy’s campaign manager. The thirty one year old is living in the Clare Lodge Direct Provision centre having left Afghanistan following a Taliban attempt on his life.
