An appeal to rescind the red card awarded to Tony Kelly in Clare’s opening National Hurling League game was unsuccessful.

On Thursday night, the Ballyea man travelled to Croke Park where the Central Hearings Committee decided to uphold the one match suspension. Cork’s Colm Lyons showed Kelly a red card for a high challenge on Tipperary’s Padraic Maher during Saturday’s defeat to Liam Sheedy’s side at Semple Stadium.

Tony will now miss Sunday’s home tie against Brian Cody’s Kilkenny but will be available for selection in two weeks time versus Cork in Pairc Uí Chaoimh.

Joint managers Donal Moloney and Gerry O’Connor have yet to unveil the starting fifteen for Sunday but it is anticipated that Clooney/Quin’s Peter Duggan who scored 1-11 for LIT in their Fitzgibbon Cup win over Garda College on Wednesday will get a starting spot while Ian Galvin hit 0-03 from play in UL’s third successive defeat in the competition when they lost out to UCD for whom David Fitzgerald was lining out at wing back for. The starting team will be announced on Saturday afternoon.
