Legal action is being taken by the Lissycasey Post Office Action Group over the closure of the village’s post office this week.

According to the group, misleading information was published by An Post. Talty’s Mace Store in Lissycasey were willing to take on the post office service but the local action group were unsuccessful in their attempts to maintain the network in the village which has been in operation for the past 32 years.

Cllr PJ Kelly is one of the members of the action group. He told The Clare Echo that he believed that in Talty’s they proposed a post office which had the “best location in the country”.

“We’re very disappointed on two grounds, first of all we have the population and secondly Talty’s was possibly the best location in Ireland and as well as that they made a number of errors in coming to their conclusions. We’re concerned about this, we have taken legal advice and we are considering our options”.

Customers must now travel to Kildysart Post Office, Cllr Kelly is unsure whether or not this will work out in the long run. “The road to Kildysart is not the easiest to travel and I don’t know what options people are considering at the moment. Naturally when they were used to Lissycasey they would have preferred to stay there”.

On the closures of several post offices in the county, the Fianna Fáil councillor stated. “Once upon a time in rural Clare, we had neglect, now we’ve assault”. He added, “As far as I’m concerned it’s an assault on rural Ireland, it would appear they are hell bent on shutting it down”.
