No requests have been made to the Diocese of Killaloe for breastfeeding to be allowed in churches across the county.

Last week, Mount St Alphonsus Church in Limerick City became Ireland’s “first official breastfeeding-friendly church”. The church signed up to the ‘We’re Breastfeeding Friendly Limerick’ run by Limerick City & County Council and Healthy Ireland which aims to normalise breastfeeding in public places as well as improving the health and wellbeing of breastfeedingmothers, babies and their families.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Killaloe told The Clare Echo that they have no such plans to implement a similar scheme as there has been no expression of interest from members of the congregation or other organisations.

“If it did arise as a request we would deal with it. It hasn’t arisen for us so it hasn’t become an issue. It’s obviously an issue in Limerick but it hasn’t arisen for us”.

Thirty-eight premises, including coffee shops, menswear stores, sports clubs, and St Alphonsus Church, have signed up to the initiative since it was launched in Limerick last month.
