Sally Smith from Open Sesame explains how you can tackle the issue of hypothyroidism. Call 065 6821480 for tickets to Thursday’s event.

At Open Sesame one of the most common medications we hear of people taking is the thyroid hormone supplement, Eltroxin. With an estimated 15 in 1000 women and 1 in 1000 men suffering from under active thyroid, hypothyroidism, in Ireland this comes as no surprise.

The thyroid is a gland located in the neck, and hormones produced by the thyroid control how quickly the body uses energy and how sensitive the body can be to other hormones.
While hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid condition we see, other thyroid conditions include hyperthyroidism (overactive), goitre and thyroid nodule (lump within the thyroid gland).

As the hormones produced by the thyroid affect so many of the bodies systems there are a wide variety of symptoms associated with hypothyroidism, including weight gain, hair loss and fatigue. There is a blood test your GP can carry out to measure the level of thyroid hormones in the blood, allowing for the detection of thyroid disorders.
While you may have to go on or even already be on thyroid medication there are dietary and lifestyle changes, and food supplements that you can make to support your thyroid function.

At Open Sesame we offer a range of products that can help support thyroid function. We have specific combinations that are aimed at thyroid support and contain such nutrients as Iodine and Tyrosine, which make up the thyroid hormone, and Selenium, which converts the thyroid hormone into its active form. Ask one of our in-store experts for recommendations, especially if you are on thyroid medication.

On Thursday 27th of September from 7pm to 8.30pm we will have Nutritional Therapist Olivia Beck (Dip NT) mNTOI in Open Sesame Ennis to discuss Supporting Your Thyroid Through Nutrition. Since 2014 Olivia has had great success specialising in supporting clients with thyroid conditions in her private practice based in Limerick.

Tickets only €10, call (065) 6821480 to book now.
