CLARE’S school kids could have a snow day if ‘The Beast from the East’ is as bad as the experts are saying it will be.

Schools across Co Clare could close this week if Met Eireann issues a red weather warning.

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy said the impending storm could make it impossible for regular transport routes to continue operating.

Education Minister Richard Bruton commented: “Decisions on school closures will be made locally by each school individually depending on the circumstances in their area”.

“It is going to be an exceptionally cold week everywhere,” Met Eireann’s Evelyn Cusack said earlier.

She went on to say that the winds that Ireland is experiencing is due to cold air coming down from the Arctic, moving to Siberia and finally moving westwards to Ireland.

“Those winds will pick up moisture as they pass over the Irish Sea,” Evelyn added.

The worst of the weather is expected to hit the Banner County on Thursday night and Friday morning due to Storm Emma, which is on the approach from the Bay of Biscay.

We could be in for another “Bank Holilday Ophelia”, but “Bank Holiday Beast from the East and Storm Emma” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
