A SECTION of footpath on the Corbally Road is to be considered for inclusion in Clare County Council’s footpaths capital works programme.
The update was given at the September meeting of the Shannon Municipal District following a Notice of Motion from Cllr James Ryan (SF).
Cllr Ryan had called for the footpath on the Corbally Road, on the DeCourcy’s side, to be resurfaced from the Westbury pedestrian entrance to the bus shelter.
He said the footpath was “badly broken” in places and raised concerns about its condition and safety.
In a written response, A/Senior Executive Engineer with Shannon Municipal District, Caimin Dillon, said the section would be considered as part of the council’s footpaths capital works programme.
“Shannon Municipal District will include this section of footpath for consideration in our footpaths capital works programme,” he said.
Speaking at the meeting, Cllr Ryan said the path was “completely broken up”.
He said he had recently been removing weeds with a leaf blower when he found that the path was lifting.
Cllr Ryan said the footpath was particularly busy in the morning, with children using it to walk to school.
“This is a matter of public safety,” he said.
He said he could not remember when the current surface had been installed but believed it could have been around 20 years ago.
Cllr Michael Begley (IND), Cathaoirleach of the Shannon Municipal District, seconded the motion.
Cllr Begley said it was not possible to safely walk from the first house towards the bridge because of the condition of the footpath.
Cllr Ryan also highlighted the overgrown hedging along the route, saying the footpath was only around a foot and a half wide in places.
