LENGTHY traffic delays have been experienced by Clare motorists this Tuesday morning.

Hundreds of vehicles gathered at the Banner Plaza from 7am on Tuesday morning including tractors, trucks and buses in the first major protest over the spiralling cost of oil, diesel, petrol, kerosene and fertiliser.

Protesters have headed on the M18 towards Newmarket-on-Fergus and Shannon and also along the N85 towards the Clareabbey Roundabout and the Lahinch Rd. The convoy is travelling in a loop and have been instructed to block the roads leading into the county town.

Organisers have encouraged demonstrators to keep the peaceful protest going for the day, a move which ironically will see them consume a significant amont of fuel, the price of which they are protesting against.

Director of C&C Executive Travel, Cathal O’Donoghue is one of the chief organisers of the Clare protest. “Keep it rolling, loop back to this roundabout and keep doing it for the day,” he said when a meeting of the protestors was convened at the Banner Plaza on Tuesday morning. “Cause as much disruption as ye can,” O’Donoghue told them before departure.

“Block the roads in along towards Ennis and keep doing a look on the roads,” he said. Drivers were told by organisers to only leave the hard shoulder open, “don’t worry about anybody else”.

Tricolours were decked on some of the vehicles with others including messages criticising the Government and the price of fuel.
