APPROVAL has been granted by An Coimisiรบn Pleanรกla for the proposed upgrade and enhancement of facilities at Inis Cealtra (Holy Island) and Mountshannon Village.

Planning permission has given the go-ahead for the construction of welfare pods, including a weather shelter, water closets, and a staff rest room principally made up of prefabricated timber components. The existing jetty to also be upgraded.

A new carpark is to be constructed in Mountshannon village along with upgrades to Mountshannon Harbour carpark and landscaping enhancements. A future proof visitor centre was also part of the planning approval.

Funding for the planning and design of the project came via the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht as part of the RRDF 2 funding measure. The project is a key part of Clare County Councilโ€™s commitment to sustainable tourism and aligns with national, regional and local strategies, including the National Planning Framework, Project Ireland 2040, the Shannon Tourism Masterplan and the Clare Tourism Strategy 2030.

Despite the green light for planning, the development of the project now hinders on the local authority securing further funding.

Head of Tourism with Clare County Council, Deirdre Oโ€™Shea stated, โ€œThe new development, subject to funding received, will further enhance the newly opened Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience which celebrates the unique cultural and natural heritage of Holy Island. This planning and design process is committed to ensuring this development is carried out sustainably, preserving the beauty and history of this iconic site for generations to comeโ€.

Last month, the Inis Cealtra Visitor Experience was officially opened. Located in the restored Rectory in Mountshannon which the Council acquired in 2021, the visitor centre was part of a โ‚ฌ5.3m refurbishment project.
