No Clare hurler included among All Star nominees

FOR THE first time since 2019, Clare will not have an All Star on the hurling team of the year.

No Clare hurler has been included among the 45 nominations which were announced by the GAA on Wednesday morning.

Clare’s All-Ireland defence did not go as plan this year when they failed to emerge out of Munster winning one game, drawing one and losing two. Both Galway and Wexford who failed to emerge from a less competitive Leinster SHC have one nominee each on the shortlist.

It is also the first time since 2019 that Clare has not had an All Star nominee. When Clare exited in the qualifiers in 2014 after winning the All-Ireland a year previous, Conor McGrath of Cratloe was nominated for an All Star.

All-Ireland champions Tipperary lead the way with thirteen followed by Cork (11), Limerick (7), Kilkenny (6), Dublin (4), Waterford (2), Galway (1) and Wexford (1).

A meeting of GAA correspondents from across print, tv, radio and digital media which was chaired by GAA President Jarlath Burns, adjudicated on Tuesday on the list which is split across three goalkeepers, 18 defenders, six midfielders and 18 forwards.

Players will decide who wins the PwC GAA GPA Hurler of the Year, the nominated trio are Tipperary forwards John McGrath and Jake Morris along with Cork attacker Brian Hayes. Inter-county players will also vote to determine the Young Hurler of the Year which has the trio of Adam English of Limerick and Tipperary pair Darragh McCarthy and Robert Doyle in the frame.
