AN AMERICAN tourist is recovering in hospital where he was airlifted to after falling from a cliff in Lahinch on Friday night.
Emergency services mounted a rescue on Friday night after a male in his twenties fell from a 23ft cliff in Lahinch.
He had been with a group of people at the Miltown Malbay Rd car park in Lahinch before falling.
Members of the Doolin Coastguard unit were assisted by Shannon-based Rescue 115 helicopter, Gardaí, units from Ennistymon attached to the Clare and Rescue Service along with paramedics from the National Ambulance Service. The alarm was raised with emergency services at approximately 22:15.
According to the Coast Guard, it was a difficult rescue as the tourist had fallen into an inaccessible area and initially the fire service could not reach him. He was winched to safety before being transported to University Hospital Galway. He was airlifted from Lahinch shortly after midnight.
Non-life threatening injuries were sustained by the man who is reported to have broken bones in his leg.
