GARDAI have urged road users in County Clare to make sure their vehicles are winter ready, as The Clare Echo has teamed up with Martin Daly Autos to bring readers road safety tips this winter.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Community Policing Unit at Ennis Garda Station has warned road users not to โ€œget caught outโ€ when bad weather strikes.
Driving Precautions in Winter Time They stated, โ€œAlthough the weather has been quite mild lately, donโ€™t get caught out if severe weather strikes. A few simple precautions can ensure the safety of you and your family on the roads this winter.

โ€œBad weather such as torrential rain, severe winds, fog, freezing fog, ice and snow can strike suddenly catching road users off guard.

โ€œIn extreme weather conditions, you should ask yourself if making a journey by road is absolutely necessary. If itโ€™s not, consider delaying your trip until the weather and road conditions improve.

โ€œThis is especially important if you are a vulnerable road user such as a pedestrian, cyclist or motorcyclist. If using the roads in such conditions is unavoidableโ€” be prepared. Inform family/friends of your planned route, estimated time of arrival and carry a mobile phone.

โ€œThe golden rule is to drive, cycle or walk with care and caution and expect the unexpected. However you should take heed of any warnings from the Emergency Services not to go out.โ€

Road Safety Advice from Ennis Garda Station

You should ask yourself is your vehicle ready for this winter??
Some points to remember are:
โ€ข service your vehicle so that it is safe for winter driving
โ€ขtop up with anti-freeze and screen wash
โ€ข check for wear and tear on wiper blades and replace them as soon as they start to smear rather than clean windows
โ€ข keep tyre pressure at the manufacturerโ€™s recommended level and check you have at least 3 millimetres of tread depth
โ€ข make sure all vehicle lights are working and clean.
