SHANNON’s tech growth is evident in the €7m investment announced by Siemens Digital Industries Software.

As reported by The Clare Echo, Siemens will establish a software research and development group in Shannon as part of a €7m investment which is to create 25 jobs in R&D over the next three years. The multimillion-euro investment will focus on High Performance Computing (HPC) in the Cloud for semiconductor design.

Siemens EDA, formerly Mentor Graphics, has had a significant presence in Shannon for over 20 years, delivering key financial and business operations worldwide. The Shannon operation of Siemens Digital Industries Software currently employs 150 people.

According to Clare TD, Joe Carey (FG) this investment highlighted the tech growth of Shannon with the region’s enterprising spirit which saw it become an international centre for manufacturing industry now assisting it to become a world leader in digital technology. He observed that Siemens’ announcement came on the back of the official opening of the Future Mobility Campus Ireland (FMCI) test centre for mobility technologies in the Shannon Free Zone.

“Apart from the 25 new jobs that will be created over the next three years, the fact that the new facility will focus on HPC for semiconductor design helps underline Shannon’s reputation for world-class research and development in the digital technology sector. The project, which is supported by IDA Ireland, will deliver cutting edge cloud HPC environments for Siemens Electric Design Automation (EDA) workloads,” Deputy Carey stated.

He added, “Due to Shannon’s central location in the Mid West between Limerick and Galway it has always attracted top talent. This expansion offers an opportunity to work on the latest technologies while benefiting from the work life balance delivered by hybrid working”.

Fellow Government TD, Cathal Crowe (FF) believed the investment was “a strong endorsement of Shannon, as a place where it will continue to do business for many years to come”. He continued, “This project is supported by the government and the IDA and is the first ‘Cloud EDA’ R&D group to be established by Siemens globally – placing Shannon in a very unique position and one that will, I hope, lure other firms looking to enter the Irish market to our doorstep”.

Deputy Crowe said, “Shannon’s location right beside the airport and a stone’s throw from the University of Limerick and the Technological University of the Shannon make it an ideal spot for graduates to live and work, which will in time rejuvenate this area. I look forward to seeing what is to come and I will continue to engage with the IDA and my colleagues in government to ensure that more investment like this comes our way”.
