A SHANNON COUNCILLOR has hit out at the “inferior service” in operation by the National Driver Licence Service (NDLS).

Clare councillors in March passed a motion calling on the Department of Transport to address the “many issues” experienced by the public at the NDLS office in Ennis, it had previously been based in the Council headquarters.

Officials in the Department of Transport contacted Clare County Council to advise them it was a matter for the Road Safety Authority, a response which was described by Cllr Gerry Flynn as “disgraceful”.

Speaking to The Clare Echo, Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) voiced his anger, “The Minister got rid of service in the first place, there is an agenda to put everything online but the fat cats are still getting fatter”.

He believed the Council delivered the service in a professional manner. “The Government and the Minister gave it to the RSA but they are not up for it, people find the service is discourteous and it doesn’t fulfil remit of delivering a proper service to people who need it, people are forced to go online without the ability to use the internet, everything is based on an appointment system, a walk-in system is not provided, it is not fulfilling remit they signed up from day one. I have documentation which said the service would be superior, it’s far from superior, it’s very much inferior”.
