CYCLISTS across Clare are gearing up for the โ€˜Odd Socks Cycleโ€™ which takes to the road at the end of April.

A peloton of cyclists will leave Shannon Leisure Centre to take on the โ€˜Odd Socks Cycleโ€™ at 9am on Sunday April 24th. The fundraiser is in aid of the Clare branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. Spot prizes are on offer for the best odd socks on show during the cycle.

According to Laura Cahir, the event โ€œwill take place to raise much needed funds for our local Down Syndrome Clare branchโ€.

She explained that cyclists can choose between a 100km or 50km spin. โ€œCyclists have a choice of routes through the beautiful Clare countryside. Cyclists looking for a longer spin will travel 100km via Quin, Kilkishen, Bodyke and Broadford while those who want a shorter outing can cycle a 50km loop via Quin, Ballycar and Newmarket on Fergus. Refreshments will be provided on both routes and at the finishโ€.

A committee of eight parents voluntarily run the local Down Syndrome branch in Clare. They strive to organise fundraising to help pay for essential therapies for their 85 members spread across the county. The therapies include speech and language, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, home tutoring, swimming, therapeutic horse riding, singing and music groups.

Persons unable to cycle are encouraged to avail of tickets for the monster raffle. Further information is available on the Down Syndrome Clare Facebook page.
