ESB have confirmed it will not be taking the delivery of Russian coal at Moneypoint “for the foreseeable future”.
On Tuesday, elected representatives of the West Clare Municipal District led by Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) voiced calls for ESB to stop sourcing supply of Russian coal for Moneypoint. The matter has also been flagged via a parliamentary question from Clare TD, Michael McNamara (IND).
Speaking to The Clare Echo, a spokesperson for ESB confirmed that it sources coal for Moneypoint on international markets with “significant stock levels” at the West Clare power plant present.
“ESB has been monitoring the escalating situation in Ukraine carefully for some time. In light of current events, ESB will not be taking delivery of Russian coal for the foreseeable future. ESB will continue to monitor the situation closely on an ongoing basis,” the spokesperson added.
The Clare Echo understands that staff based in Killimer had informed management they would refuse to unload Russian coal if it landed in Moneypoint.
