Ennis Golf Club claimed the bragging rights over their Woodstock counterparts by securing this year’s Costelloe Cup.

Lahinch Golf Club:

The ladies of Lahinch golf club are holding the annual ‘Play in Pink’ event on Monday on the Old course in aid of Breast Cancer Research.

This year, for the first time, tee-times have been provided on the Castle Course to cater for any men who may wish to support this worthy cause

Due to the success of the 2021 raffle using iDonate, the platform will be used gain this year and the closing date for entries is April 4th. Many great prizes are up for grabs, including fourballs at Lahinch, Doonbeg, Dromoland, Woodstock, Powerscourt and Limerick while and many local businesses and individuals have donated vouchers, hampers and prizes.

Meanwhile lady captain Margaret Cooney and Johnny O’Brien, men’s captain have extended thanks to all members who supported the humanitarian effort for the people of Ukraine, last weekend. €1,000 was raised in donations and €1,675 through competition entry fees.

Shannon Golf Club:

The March medal, sponsored by Gleeson Goldsmiths was played for at Shannon last week when the winner was Donal Madden (13) with 66. The gross was won by Jason O’Donnell (1) with 75,

In category A, Derek Sweeney (5) was the winner with 71 from Jamie Hodge (7) with a similar score with third spot filled buy Vincent Scully (7) with 72.

Category B was won by Anthony Connolly(17) with 67 from Patrick J. Moroney (9) with 68 and Joe Finlay (10) with 69.

Dermot Eyres (27) won category C with 69 from Karl Moloney (21) with 70 with third spot filled by Jeremiah O’Connor (21), also with 70.

Ennis Golf Club:

Last week’s ladies 14 hole singles stableford competition at Ennis was won by Ann O’Loughlin (18) with 28 points. Anne Casey (28) was second with 27 points followed by Helen Harnett (24) with 26 points, Bridie Hanrahan (20) with 26 points and Anne Pyne Gallery (29), also with 26 points.

In the 9 hole stableford competition, Bernie Brooks (19) won with 18 points from Nuala D’Auria (17) with 17 points and Mary Glynn (18) with 16 points.

Last week’s senior ladies competition was won by Mary and Anne McMahon and Alice D’Arcy with 47.8 from Brid Cunningham, Kathleen Frehill and Kate O’Ceallaigh with 50.7

The lady captain’s charity 14 hole scramble was won by Mary Walshe (25) Ann O’Loughlin (13) Celia Reilly (23) with 33 points from Mary Leahy (22), Suzanne Deane (11) and Liz Kelly (32) also with 33 points.

There were joint winners of the winter league with both finishing on 542 points. The yellow team comprised Kitty Morris, Bridie Hanrahan, Monica Finnerty, Geraldine O’Rourke, Rose Enright and Patricia O’Reilly while the green team included Mary Lenihan, Peig Hanrahan, Noreen Courtney, Anne Casey, Nuala D’Auria and Anne A Gallery

Meanwhile the Ennis Seniors men’s social group held a competition on Thursday when the format was a team of four. The winners with 75 points were Ollie O’Loughlin, Neil Cremin, Michael A Considine and Gerry Scanlan. In second place with 73 points were Matt Flynn, Michael Kerin, Tom Fox and Seamus Frehill and they were followed by Noel Pyne, Denis Smith, Sean Daly and Sean Fitzpatrick with 71 points.

Ennis captured the Costsello Cup, the annual competition between themselves and Woodstock, last weekend. The competition was decided on the best five scores from each club. The leading Ennis pairings were Tom and Kieran Fox with 46 points followed by Flan Lyons and Martin Moroney with 45, Flan Glynn and Roy Duggan wisth 44, Flan Downes and Barry Lee with 44, Tony Lawlor and Michael O’Reilly with 43.

East Clare Golf Club:

The Winter League at East Clare finished on Sunday. There was a huge entry of 18 teams in the competition.
In the cup competition the winners were Siobhan Shanahan, Noreen O Grady, Paul Madden, Mike Hayes, Nick Ryan and Marin Mc Keogh with 161 points.
In second place with 154 points were Mary Farrell, Nadine Fox, Martin McInerney, Barney McInerney, Mark McInerney and Colm Kelly.

Third place was filled by Noreen Doyle, Mary Brennan, Teddy O’Hanlon, Sean Kelleher, John G Doyle and John Duffy with 150 points.

The shield winners, with 159 point, were Eileen Donnellan, Heather Cullen, Danny Minogue, John Doyle, Tom Larkin and John Fahy.

They were followed in second place by Helen Ahern, Helen Downey, Kieran Kennedy, Tony Duggan, Eoghan Mannion and Damien Kinery with 152 points.

The winners in the novice section were Celia Moloney, Bridget Minogue, Brendan Moloney, Tim Walsh, Michael Larkin and Michael Darcy with 140 points.

Last weekend’s men’s stableford competition was won by Ronan Molloy with 44 points from John G. Doyle with 43 points and Ray McInerney with 42 points. Eoin Magill won the gross with 70.

In the ladies 18 hole stableford competition the winner was Rachel Whelan with 35 points from Loretto O’Donnell with 34 points.

Kilrush Golf Club:

Winner of the 18 hole open stableford competition at Kilrush on Sunday was John Robinson (25) with 40 points from Noel Kilkenny (19) with 39 points with third spot filled by Michael J. Hogan (18) who also scored 39 points.

In the Spring singles on Saturday, Dominic Enright (16) won with 29 points from Finbarr McMahon(13) with 28 points. In third spot, also with 28 points, was Derek Garvey (10) followed by Michael J. Hogan (13) with 28 points and John Robinson (17) with 28 points.

The Spring series order of merit winner is Dominic Enright with 129 points. The Eclectic stableford winner is Matthew Dillon with 40 points and the Eclectic scratch winner is Malcolm McCarthy, also with 40 points.

Dromoland Golf Club:
Ann Nix and Sandy Smyth were the winners of the Granard foursomes competition at Dromoland with 19 points.

In the ladies 9 hole competition Shauna Moylan won from Majella Cotgreave with Katrina O’Neill third and Leslie O’Flynn in fourth spot. All four returned scores of 19 points.

In the men’s senior competition last week Noel McMahon won category A from Michael Bennett with Barry Walsh in third spot.

Category B was won by Denis Minihane from Michael Leyden with Michael Riordan in third position.

Woodstock Golf Club:

Woodstock’s bid to retain the Costello cup failed narrowly on Sunday when they went under to Ennis on a scoreline of 222 points to 216 points.

Woodstock’s top five pairings in the weekend’s competition were Noel Casey and Michael Lynch with 45 points, Aidan and John Mulcahy with 44 points, Ross Darmody and Colm O’Callaghan with 43 points, Joe Colleran and Barry Scanlan with 42 points, Joe Hurley and Michael O’Neill, also with 42 points.

The Spring league resumes this weekend when the format will be a team of four with two scores to count at each hole. There will be a similar competition for club members not involved in the league

Fanny O’Deas society:

In glorious sunshine the Fanny O’Deas society held its first outing of the year when thirty members played at Spanish Point in a competition sponsored by Martin Casey.

The winner was John Leahy (15) with 45 points from Alan Carmody (26) with 40 points, James Whelan (22) with 40 points, Paul Faughnan (16) with 39 points and Brian Kilker (22) with 38 points.

Nearest the pin was Alan Jackson, while the longest drive as won by Mark Cottam.
The society’s next outing will be on Saturday April 30th to Gort at 11.38am

Clare football classic:

After an absence of two years due to Covid 19 restsrictions, the golf classic in aid of Clare football is going ahead this year. Woodstock is the venue on Thursday April 28 and Friday April 29 for the team of four competition.

Teams can be entered through any of the team management or senior players or tso any of the committee which includes Mary Keane, Niomh Madigan, Tommy Tubriidy, Ciaran Browne, Michael Clancy, Kevin Callinan, Seamus Hayes and Colm Collins.
