ZIMMER BIOMET have submitted further information to Clare County Council on their plans for a significant development at their Shannon facility.

A two-storey manufacturing expansion at Zimmer’s site in East Park, Shannon Industrial Site has been sought.

In November 2024, the orthopaedic manufacturer applied to the planning department of Clare County Council for “a two-storey manufacturing expansion 13m high with a footprint of 2168.125 m2 and an overall floor area of 4340 m2 over two floors located to the North and adjoining the existing facility”. A new perimeter roadway is also planned for the facility.

Concerns from the Council regarding traffic issues at the site led to Maceo Design & Management Ltd providing further information on Zimmer’s behalf.

The planning department requested “details of the potential increase in the number of employees on the site at the operational stage as a result of the proposed extensions to the existing manufacturing facility”.

“Details of the existing parking arrangements for staff and visitors on the site and an assessment of the adequacy of the same to accommodate the potential increased demand for onsite parking”, was also requested.

In response to this, Zimmer produced amended drawings which outlined their plans for traffic management at the Shannon site. Each kind of vehicle at the site will be given its own entry and exit paths in order to improve safety and reduce traffic congestion. Trucks and HGVs will enter and exit Zimmer from the left side of the facility while private cars will make use of the right-hand side.

With the required information now submitted, Zimmer will have to wait a further four weeks to find out if they have been approved or refused by Clare County Council.

The orthopaedic manufacturer currently employs more than 17,000 people in over 100 countries.

At the end of February, Zimmer secured the naming rights of Cusack Park as part of a three-year deal with Clare GAA with the option to extend for a further two.

Employing over 800 people in Ireland between its manufacturing facilities in Shannon and Galway, Zimmer was founded in 1927. The global medical technology leader established its Shannon base in 2008. It employs 17,000 people around the world with operations in more than 25 countries and sells products in more than 100 countries.
