Clare’s Chief Superintendent has said persons responsible for bringing drugs into the county need to be targeted.

Arrests related to simple possession of drugs in Clare has dropped from 210 in 2020 to 113 in 2021 for the period of January to August, a reduction of 46 percent.

Less arrests have also been made on the sale and supply of drugs in Clare this year with the figure of 57 lower than the 71 recorded last year.

Speaking on Monday, Chief Supt Seán Colleran outlined, “For sale or supply sometimes isn’t as accurate a picture as we think. In the middle of that, some very significant amount of drugs have been seized”.

He was adamant that increased efforts need to made to catch the ring-leaders who are bringing drugs into Clare. “We have to target the people at the highest level bringing drugs into Clare and also the lower level crime associated with it”.
