A woman involved in a serious assault in Ennis late last month has died.

Sharon Bennett was left unconscious following an assault in The Market, Ennis on Thursday January 28. After almost two weeks in hospital, she died on Wednesday with a post-mortem conducted later that afternoon.

An Garda Síochána have confirmed to The Clare Echo that investigations are ongoing.

At a special sitting of Ennis District Court, Det Noelle Bergin stated that the injured party was left in “an unconscious state since the alleged assault” and suffered serious head injuries.

Last Wednesday, Patrick Ballard (34) appeared via video link at another sitting of Ennis District Court. Judge Patrick Durcan further remanded Mr Ballard in custody to March 3rd for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to provide directions in the case.

A native of Wexford, Sharon had been living in Corofin before moving to Ennis. The twenty eight year old was a mother of two.
