Status Red Weather Warning

CO CLARE is one of four counties under a Status Orange weather warning for Sunday (tomorrow).

Met Éireann have issued an Orange wind warning for Clare, Donegal, Galway and Mayo which is in effect from 12pm until 9pm on Sunday. The whole of Ireland will be under a Status Yellow wind warning from 12am (midnight) on Sunday until 3am on Monday.

With the arrival of Storm Ashley, Met Éireann has urged people to stay away from the coast. Meteorologist Joanna Donnelly said Storm Ashley is a “very serious storm” and there will be strong winds, particularly on west-facing coasts.

She said the highest spring tides of the year are expected and there will be coastal flooding. “We’ve kind of got a perfect storm going on here, it is very serious. The main message we need to get out is there is to stay away from the coasts. Don’t risk your life for an Instagram photo,” she said on RTÉ.

Winds gusting up to 130 kilometres per hour may also cause power outages and damage power lines, and damage to weakened structures, the forecaster said. These conditions, coupled with high spring tides, will bring a risk of flooding along the south and west coasts, with large waves expected.

Due to the weather warning, the Clare District Soccer League (CDSL) has postponed all fixtures which were scheduled to take place on Sunday. In total, fourteen games across the Premier, First, Second and Third Division will not go ahead as planned.

Clare’s SHC final between Feakle and Sixmilebridge has also been postponed as a result.

Coiste na nÓg Peil an Chláir have moved all U17 games to 10am on Sunday morning, these include the meetings of Corofin vs Kilmurry Ibrickane, Ennistymon vs St Breckan’s, Parteen/Meelick vs Shannon Gaels/Kilmihil and Doonbeg vs St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield.
