Formed in 1966, Shannon Golf Club marked the beginning of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations with this year’s Captains’ Drive In.

A large crowd of members and guests gathered to congratulate the incoming officers.

Captain Brian Lonergan and Lady Captain Joan Hoctor have given many years of dedicated service to the club.

This year also marks a historic moment for the club, which welcomes the club’s first ever brother and sister pairing as Junior Captains. Jack and Grace McNamara.

They are grandchildren of the late Des McDonnell, a stalwart of junior golf and a hugely influential figure in the development of young players at Shannon over many years.

It was a proud and memorable occasion for all involved, and a fitting start to what promises to be a special year of celebrations for the club.
Joe Robbins chairman and Joe Walsh club president were also in attendance at the drive in.

Lsst week’s 2 man modified scramble was won by Brendan O’Brien (13) and Ignatius Cullen (16) with 53 points and they had one to spare over Nathan (6) and Tom Fox (15).

The men’s 18 hole singles was won by Oliver Nevin (13) with 35 points from Kevin Justice (14) with 34 points with third place filled by David Duhig (8) and he also had 34 points. John Dolan (+3) won the gross with 37 points.

Ennis Golf Club:

Last week’s men’s fourball stableford competition at Ennis was won by  Peter Morris (15) and Eoin O Keeffe (12) with 40 points. They won on a countback from John A. Byrne (15) and Mark Geraghty (8) with third spot filled by Cian O’Nolan (16) and Mark O’Brien (15) who also had 40 points.

The senior ladies scramble was won by Martina Corbett, Mary Kearns and Ada McMahon with 44.44 from Brid Cunnigham, Nuala D’Auria and Anne McMahon with 44.94 with third spot filled by Phil Butler, Judith Brassil, Maureen Moloney and Margaret Flanagan with 48.54.  The overall winner in the ladies 17 hole stableford competition was Martina Corbett (33) with 32 points.

Mary Lenihan (17) won division 1 with 32 points, Ann Pyne Gallery (33) won division 2 with 32 points and Marie Connolly (47) won division 3 with 30 points.

Geraldine O’Mahoney (17) won the ladies 8 hole competition with 14 points from Carmel Verling (12) with 13 points with third spot filled by Phil Butler (15) with 11 points.

Last week’s senior men’s competition attracted 67 entries and the team of four event was won by Tom Saunders, Michael Cummins, Michael Ball and Michael Clancy with 67 points. They had one to spare over Richard O’ Connell, Paul Mockler, Brian Tuohy and Tim Kelly with third spot filled by Brendan Pyne, Jim Farrell, Denis Smith and Ger O’ Brien, also with 66 points.

In fourth pace with 53 points were John C McNamara, Tim Scanlan, Padraic Larkin and Pat Garry followed on 62 points by Ger O’ Brien, Michael Kerin, Damon Murphy and Frank Cullinan. Also on 62 points were Sean Daly, Liam McCannon, Seamus Bowe and Tommy Heath followed by John K Considine, Ger Hanrahan, Matt Flynn and Fintan McEvoy who also returned 62 one more than Michael Neylon, Noel Connellan, Gerry Scanlon and Neil Cremin.

The Friday open singles was won by Barry Larkin (10) with 37 points from Gerry Broderick (24) with a similar score. In third place with 34 points was Cyril Lyons (13) while Sean Crowe won the gross with 32 points.
There was a big entry for the Easter Saturday scramble which was won by Clare Pyne, John Staunton and Steve Burns with 45.2 from Lorraine Barry, Conor Murphy and Derek Healy with 45.3. In third place with 45.9 were Geraldine O’Rourke, Christy Fitzgerald and Declan Hanley followed by Una O’Reilly, Ferdie O’Donoghue and John Kearse with 47.1, Maureen Moloney, Maureen Lynch and Paul Mockler with 47.9 with sixth place filled by Peggy Costello, Pat Murphy and Paul White with 48.3.

They were followed in seventh place by Carmel Verling, Gerry O’Brien and Kieran Holland with 50.1 with eighth place filled by Joan Murphy, Michael O’Grady and Enda Burns with 51.5.

Kilrush Golf Club:

The Johnson’s Bar Spring series qualifier continued at Kilrush at the weekend when the winner was Mark Cottam (10) with 34 points. Second place was filled by John Robinson (19) with 29 points with John K. Ryan in third place. Andrew Young won the gross.

Dromoland Golf Club:

The men’s 18 hole stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Niall Dunne with 40 points and he won by one from Ruairi Price with third place filled by Brian Foudy with 36 points. Tom O’Sullivan won the category for handicappers of 20 and over with 33 points. Brian Shally won the gross with 31 points.

Mary Arthur with 34 points won the ladies 18 hole stableford competition from Dorothy Brennan with 33 with third place filled by Leslie O’Flynn, also with 33 points. The winner of the ladies 9 hole competition was Siobhan Doohan with 21 points from Louise Guilfoyle with 20 points with Michelle Bennett, also with 20 points, in third place.

Spanish Point Golf Club:

Last week’s ladies 18 hole competition at Spanish Point was v par. It was won on a countback by Eimear Johnston with +3 and she won from Claire Bracken who had a similar score. Third place was filled by Bridget Hayes with Brid Quealy in fourth spot.

Lahinch Golf Club:

The annual general meetings of Lahinch golf club, mens, ladies and overall sections were held on Good Friday, at the Falls Hotel, Ennistymon.

Presidents for the coming year are Jenny Cagney and Dan O’Donovan while the incoming captains are Miriam O’Keeffe and John Gleeson.

Due to ongoing clubhouse redevelopment works, the captains’ drive-In, normally held on Easter Sunday, did not take place but is scheduled for the May bank holiday weekend.

Woodstock Golf Club:

Frank McEnery (12) with 41 points was the winner of the weekend singles competition at Woodstock while Joe Barry (9) with 32 points won the gross.

The category winners were Cathal Nagle (8) with 37 points (category 1)
Barry McNamara (10) with 39 points (category 2) and Mike Horgan (18) with 30 points (category 3).

Winners in the 2’s competition were Mike Liddy (6th & 8th holes), Frank Landy (4th hole) and Paul Coote (8th hole).

This week’s senior’s outing was won by Joe Keane, Sean Heaslip, Liam McInerney and Luke Duffy with 107 points.

There will be another club singles this weekend while the Costello cup, an annual fixture between Woodstock and Ennis, will be played for on Sunday at Woodstock. The timesheet is in the Pro shop.

East Clare Golf Club:

The Derg Credit Union sponsored open team of 3 champagne scramble at East Clare was a big success, attracting a big entry.

Winners in the ladies section were Siobhan Shanahan, Colette Ward and Mairead O’Shea with 63 points and they won on a countback from Brid Hayes, Margaret MacNamara and Deirdre Tuohy.

In the men’s competition the winners were Denis Purcell, Richard Meehan and Ben Hynes with 69 points and they had three to spare over Mike Heffernan, Seamus Whelan and Donal Fleming.

Winners in the mixed team section were Dylan, Kevin and Lauren Maher from Roscrea with 63 points.

Last week’s ladies Wednesday competition was won by Noreen Skehan, Liz McMahon and Ann O’Grady from Mary Jo Minogue, Colette and Phil Burke with third place filled by Breda McCarthy, Mary Donoghue and Mary Stritch.

In the men’s 2 ball matchplay qualifier the winners were P. Hayes (14) and D. Hayes (15) with 46 points and they won by two from T.O’Hanlon (15) and K. Quinn (14).

The weekend’s men’s stableford competition was won by Kieran Kennedy (20) with 43 points from Kevin Wallis (10) with 39 points.

Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by John Nihill, Jim Willis and Kieran McNamara from Danny Minogue, Seamus Whelan and Pat Duggan with third place filled by Pat McNamara, Ailbe McDonnell and Jim Fahy.

Gort Golf Club:

Good Friday’s open 18 hole singles stableford at Gort, sponsored by Ward & Burke, was won by Joseph Caulfield (10) with 36 points.

The open 18 hole singles on Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by Glenn Cahill Cars saw Colman Cooney (8) win category 1 with 38 points.

Category 2 was won by Barry McMahon (14), also with 38 points. The category 3 winner was Brian Monaghan (18) with 35 points while category 4 was won by Chris Fahy (22) with 39 points.

Cooney (8) was in winning form again on Monday when he won category 1 in the open 18 hole singles stableford sponsored by Ward & Burke with 32 points.

Category 2 was won by Diarmuid Collins (14) with 35 points, category 3 by Ronald Ryan (17) with 32 points and category 4 by Nigel Naughton (30) with 40 points.

The recent ladies open 18 hole singles stableford competition, sponsored by Ward & Burke, was won by Sandra Ferguson (21) with 33 points from Marcella Killeen (20) with 32 points.

The weekend 18 hole singles sponsored by Centra, Kilcolgan saw Sinead Collins (14) win category 1 with 34 points. Category 2 was won by Teresa Kavanagh (22) with 32 points, category 3 honours went to Aileen Walsh (38) with 37 points while category 4 was won by Margaret Coleman (45) with 13 points.

Sixmilebridge Golf Society:

Congratulations to Sean Lynch on winning the first Sixmilebridge golf society outing of 2026 which took place at Tipperary golf club at the weekend. The tee-time started at 1.30pm and golfers got the brunt of Storm Dave at that time.

Sean managed to play a solid round in the most difficult conditions to win with a few shots to spare. Well done to the 30 golfers who played through the storm.

Other prize winners were Ian Mulready (2nd), Pa Mulready (3rd) and John Chaplin (4th). Dave Watson won the front nine with the back nine honours going to Conor Collins while the par 3 competition was won by Chris Watson.

Clare Football Golf Classic:

The annual Art Data Centres Clare football classic takes place at Woodstock on Thursday and Friday of next week, April 16 and 17. All funds raised from this venture go to help with the preparation of teams at development, squad, minor, under 20 and senior levels. The timesheet for this team of four event is with Seamus Hayes at 087-2186172.
