SHANNON qualified for the All-Ireland Jimmy Bruen quarter finals when they scored two good wins at Woodstock at the weekend.

Under team manager Colm Hanley who is also the club captain they will travel to Mannan Castle in Monaghan on August 30 in search of progress in the All-Ireland series. Colm is assisted by Liam O’Mahoney, Seamus Hanley and Ed Hickey.

On Saturday they defeated Ballyneety from Limerick on a 3.5 to 0-5 score. The team members were Alan Small and David Jones; Keith Buckley and Joe Finlay; Dermot O’Donoghue and Sean Og Murnane;
Derek Sweeney and Declan Heffernan.

This win put them through to the final on Sunday where Doneraile from Cork provided the opposition and here the Shannon team recorded a 3-1 win. Kevin McCarthy and Davy Ryan replaced Alan Small and David Jones for this match.

The Ennis golf club junior sixes team were crowned Munster champions in Kanturk on Monday. The team reached the Munster final by firstly winning the North Munster final after beating off competition from over 40 clubs. They now progress to the All-Ireland final in Grange golf club, Dublin on September 21.

The team members are Síofra Corry, Andrea Fox, Oisín Hennessy, Ben Kenneally, Ronan Lahiffe and Ben Moloney and the managers are Tom Fox and Ann Gallery.

Ennis Golf Club:

Last week’s senior ladies competition at Ennis was won by Kathleen Pyne, Josephine Tone and Martina Corbett with 49.1 from Peig Cleary, Irene Jordan and Carmel Verling with 51.5 with third place filled by Kathleen Frehill, Margaret Flanagan and Mary Murray with 59.3.

The weekly ladies competition was a fourball betterball sponsored by Holly’s Haven Pharmacy and it was won by Betty O’Reilly (32) and Nuala Corry (23) with 42 points. They were one ahead of Della Burns (20) and Mary Lenihan (13) with Helen Gallery (21) and Ann A Gallery (10) in third place on 40 points.

Bridget (21) and Maeve Hoey (28) won the front nine with 21 points while the back nine was won by Joan Murphy (28) and Attracta Williams (29) with 20 points.

The overall winner of the 9 hole single was Ann Casey (16) with 20 points. There were no entrants in division 1 while division 2 was won by Margaret Flanagan (18) with 17 points with division 3 honours going to Maureen Moloney (21) with 18 points.

There was another bit entry for the senior men’s team competition on Thursday when the winners with 76 points were Frank Cullinan, Michael Kerin, Neil Cremin and Flan Lyons. They had three to spare over Vincent Corbett, Gerry Fitzmaurice, Paul McCabe and Seamus Hanrahan who were one ahead of Padraig Ryan, Ronnie Guinnane, Jim Hennessy and Brendan Pyne.

In fourth place, also with 72 points, were Michael Clancy, Pat Murphy, Gerry Kelly and Sean Ryan followed on 71 by Tom Gallery, Damon Murphy, PJ Garry and Seamus Bowe. Also wih 71 points and in sixth spot were Declan Hanley, Joe O Brien, Matt Flynn and Jimmy Kearns followed by Richard O Connell, Michael Cusack, Eamonn Kelly and Tony T McInerney with 71 with eighth position filled by Tony Lawler, Ferdie O Donoghue, Martin Coffey and Liam Pyne with 69 points.

The Friday open singles was won by Ian Myatt (7) with 37 points, two more than Shay Drohan (8) from Shannon. The gross was won by Sarah Cunningham (-1) with 30 points

Kilrush Golf Club:

The annual open week at Kilrush golf club was a big success with good numbers taking part in a variety of competitions.

The SuperValu mens singles on August weekend was won by Patrick O’ Dea (21) from Lahinch with 41 points. He had three to spare over Michael Moloney (19) with Seamus O’Doherty (18) a point further back in third place. Jim Young Junior won the gross with 31 points.

The Galleon Bar singles on August 5 was won by Jim Young Snr (9) with 39 points, one more than Sean Lyons (16) with third place filled by Liam Griffin (Luttrellstown GC) (19), also with 38 poinrts. Tom Clancy won the gross with 36 points.

The Ennis Electrical singles was won by Paul Keane (36) with 37 points from Bill O’ Reilly (14) with a similar score with Brian Scanlan (11) in third place, a point back on 36 points. Declan O’ Donovan won the gross.

In the AON Physiotherapy singles the winner was Tom Clancy (+1) with 38 points from Pat Brennan (11), also with 38 points with third place filled by Noel Thornton (20) with 36 points. Malcolm McCarthy won the gross.

Seamus O’ Doherty (17) with 3 up won the KG&SC V Par competition from Billy Clarke (17) with 1 up with third place filled by Martin P Brennan (20) who was level.

The KG&SC stableford competition was won by John Donnelly (15) from Derek Garvey (9) with third spot filled by Michael JM Kelly (19) , all three scoring 35 points.

Sunday’s Versiv open stroke competitio was won by Tom Fox (13) with 62 from Michael Miniter (13) on 67 and Robert McKernan (24), also with 67. Shane Lillis (+3) won the gross with 70.

The winner of the P and M ladies singles was Clodagh Brilly (39) from, Kileen GC with 37 points and she won on a countback from Mary Downes (30). In third place with 36 point was Michelle Quinn (23) from Boyle GC with 36 points followed by Anne Brennan (16) with 33 points. Fiona Kinsella won the gross with 21 points.

The AON Physiotherapy ladies singles on August 7 was won by Marion Brennan (23) with 39 points, three more than Carmel O’ Flaherty (47) with Ailish Lorigan (21) a point further back in third place on 35 points. Fiona Kinsella won the gross.

Dromoland Golf Club:

The AIB sponsored ladies 18 holes stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Mary Arthur with 38 points and she had one to spare over Maria Colfer with Mairéad Bergin next with 36 points followed by Mairéad Toomey, also with 36 points.

In the 9 hole weekly competition the winner was Mary Rogers with 18 points from Michelle McCarthy with 17 points.

Last week’s ladies 18 hole singles was won on a countback by Deirdre Cooney from Siobhan Dyar, both scoring 38 points. Joan Ryan was third with 37 points.

In the 9 hole competition on the same day, Annette Shanahan won with 22 points from Frances Bergin with 20.

The men’s competition at the weekend was v par and the winner was Brian Shally with 3 up from Adam Merriman with 2 up with Daniel Lennon in third place with 2 up followed by Brian Maloney, also with 2 up. Seamus Cusack with 2 up won the gross.

The men’s 9 hole competition was won by Shane Mowat from Niall Geraghty with Jason Mulderrig in third place.

In last week’s men’s seniors competition, Group A was won by Shay O’Callaghan from Willie Fitzgerald with Con Ryan in third place.
Group B was won by Don Barrett from George O’Carroll with Pat Bergin in third spot.

Woodstock Golf Club:

Joe Barry (12) with 41 points won the weekend club singles at Woodsock. The gross was won by Sean Crowe (2) with 32 points
Cathal O’Neill (9) with 33 points won category 1 from Cathal O’Sullivan (7) with 33 points.

Category 2 was won by Noel Crowe (18) with 39 points from Henry Butler (18) with a similar score while category 3 was won by Joseph Kennedy (19) with 37 points.

David White (11th hole) was a winner in the 2’s competition.
Last week’s open singles at Woodstock was won by David White (14) with 37 points with Tony Cleary from East Clare (+3) winning the gross with 35 points.

Category 1(+ to 10) was won by Colin Ryan, Shannon (7) with 36 points and he won on a countback from Mark Hogan (10).

Cat 2 (11 to 18) was won by Kenny O’Shaughnessy (15) with 36 points, one more than Donnacha Dunne (18) while category 3 (19 and over) was won by Tom Dormer (21) with 32 points.

Winners in the 2’s competition were Robbie Dormer (6th hole), Kenny O’Shaughnessy (14th), Rob Cantwell (14th) and Ken Horgan (14th).

In last week’s Holly’s Haven Pharmacy mixed scramble the winners were Jarlath Fahy, Edel Clune, Joan Purcell and Neilus Butler with 22.6 and they won from Johnny Clune, Mary Holland, Patsy Nugent and Nick Germaine with 24.

Woodstock defeated Spanish Point in the Anne Heskin trophy by 3/2 last week and they now go on to play Adare Manor at Woodstock on August 17.

The Michael Cashman team defeated Ennis in Woodstock on a score of 4/1. They will be away to Newcastle West in their next match on a date to be confirmed.

The weekly open singles continues on this Thursday as does the weekly Holly’s Haven Pharmacy mixed scramble.

The weekend competition will be the Michael Cullinan Memorial.

East Clare Golf Club:

Last week’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition at East Clare was won by Maureen Clune (32) with 28 points from Mary Brennan (29) with 24 points.

The ladies team of three outing to Portumna on August 6 was won by Celia Moloney, Maureen Clune and Mary Jo. Minogue from Mary Hogan, Trish Kerr and Mary Donoghue with third place filled by Brid Hayes, Joan Crotty and Teresa Bradley.

The men’s v par competition off the white tees was won by Michael O’Halloran (19) with 5 up while Tony Cleary (-1) won the gross 79.

Last week’s men’s stableford competition was won by Matthew McNamara (15) with 39 points from Enda Byrnes (19) with 37 points The gross was won by Jason Kelly (0) with 70.

The winners of the senior men’s competition on August 6 were Tony Nelson, Danny Minogue and Chris Davis from Sean Ahern, Tadhg Murphy and Tony Kay with third place filled by Kevin Wallis, Willie Roche and Sean Jones.

The winners of the Friday mixed scramble were Sean Jones, Mary Farrell and Ben Hynes from Terry Coughlan, Jim Lynch and Margaret Hoey with third spot filled by Breda O’Loghlin, Brian Muldoon and Irene Bake.

Gort Golf Club:

Piaras O’Dea (30) won the Minihanes SuperValu 18 hole singles at Gort with 41 points.

The category winners were Joseph Caulfield (9) with 38 points, Colm Dillon (14) with 40 points and Tom Sands (27) with 39 points. The gross was won by Joe Moran (1) with 34 points.

The winner of the Friday open singles was David O Shaughnessy (18) from Loughrea with 39 points. The gross was won by P J. McAllen (4) with 34 points.

The Bank holiday Monday single was won by Eanna Gantley (21) with 39 points. He gross was won by Joe Moran (1) with 28 points.

Last week’s ladies singles was won by Mary Kilroy (16) from Loughrea with 35 points.

The weekend open singles was won by Sinead O Connor (25) with 41points from Olive Mulcair (20) with 36 points.

The Bank holiday open singles was won by Karen Mooney (46) with 36 points from Angela Fahey (37) with 34 points.

Kildysart Golf Society:

After Mark Cottam’s win at the Vincent Ward event in Kilrush, Bryan Hayes has extended his lead at the top of the golfer of the year standings in the Kildysart golf society.

He leads on 137 points from Gary Brooks on 128 with Liam Browne on 126.

The society’s next outing is to Portumna on Sunday August 24. New members and guests are welcome.
