INSTALLATION of park benches or seating is to be considered for Carrowmore Cemetery in Scariff.

It follows a request from Cllr Pat Burke (FG) at a recent sitting of the Killaloe Municipal District. “I was approached by some people in the area, it is a very large cemetery,” he outlined.

Siobhan O’Reilly of Clare County Council’s rural department admitted, “It has not been our practice heretofore to provide seating in our Burial Grounds, given the number of burial grounds within our area of responsibility and the additional costs associated with same within limited resources”.

She said that the burial grounds unit would consider the request “with a view to determining if such can be delivered”.

Seating has been installed at Illaunamanagh cemetery in Shannon, Cllr Burke noted as he put forward the argument for seating in Scariff. “On a nice Sunday afternoon elderly people could do with some seating to give them a rest for a minute as they walk around and sit in peace”.

As he supported the proposal, Cllr Joe Cooney (FG) suggested that a request be made to Council’s memorial committee. “In some situations requests have come in from families or communities to donate seating,” he recalled.
