Scariff/Ogonnelloe were crowned Clare under 21 B hurling champions on Sunday when they recorded a four point merited win over Feaklle/Kilanena.

Scariff/Ogonnelloe 1-15
Feakle/Killanena 1-11
Venue: Whitegate

In what was a repeat of last year’s A final also won by Scariff/ Ogonnelloe, the winners were the better balanced side and they had a bigger spread of scorers on the day.

While Feakle/Killanena made things difficult for their opponents, they struggled to find scores from open play on a day when all but two points of their tally came from frees.

A goal from their top scorer Mici Sheedy helped the winners to a three point lead at the interval when the score was 1-7 to 0-7.

Strong performances from Scott Cairns, Sean Hartigan and Liam Crotty in defence ensured that the winners didn’t cough up too many scoring opportunities.

The Feakle/Killanena defence was under pressure from the opening minutes with Mici Sheedy, Paul Rodgers and Lee Hartigan causing them lots of problems while Tadhg Minogue gave the winners an edge at midfield,

The game attracted a big attendance, the majority of which came from the four parishes from which the teams were drawn.

After the game Clare GAA’s Central Council delegate Robert Frost praised both teams before calling on Clare GAA’s children’s Welfare officer Joan Crotty from the Scariff club to present the cup to the winners’ joint captains Scot Cairns and Mici Sheedy.

The team was managed by Martin Hartigan and his backroom team included Brian Minogue, Michael Long, Rory Skelly, P.J. Delaney, Keelan Hartigan and Mark McKenna.

Francis O’Grady managed Feakle/Killanena and his backroom team comprised Cathal Noonan, Oisin Donnelllan, Shane McGrath, and Liam O’Connor.

It was a good weekend for the Scariff/Ogonnelloe amalgamation as their second under 21 team qualified for the D championship final with a 0-19 to 1-13 win over Sixmillebridge.

In the final they will face St Joseph’s Doora/Barefield who defeated Clooney-Quin in the other semi-final.
