Residents of a Kilkee estate “deserve better” as attempts to construct a footpath have not brought the desired outcome.

Provision of a footpath on the L6051 outside Mount Charles Terrace in Kilkee and the dressing of the adjacent road surface was requested by Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) at a sitting of the West Clare Municipal District.

An unsuccessful application was made by Clare County Council to the National Transport Authority’s Active Travel grant scheme this year for funding to construct a new footpath on Mount Charles Terrace.

Senior executive engineer in the West Clare MD, Alan Kennelly stated, “We will continue to seek funding for a new footpath at Mount Charles Terrace, and if funding should become available, we will construct the requested footpath. The L-6051-0 is not included for surface dressing or restoration improvement works on the recently adopted 2021 Schedule of Municipal District Works. It can be considered for inclusion on the 2022 Schedule”.

Cllr Keating explained that the estate is on the right as you approach from Doonbeg, “the road is exceptionally wide but has no footpath. It is an ideal place for unauthorised camping, sometimes our friends that move in at summer time have to be moved on”. The Cross native added, “A lot of the residents are elderly, they deserve better”.
