CLARE’s staging of Relay for Life proved to be a resounding success.

There was a record-breaking turnout of teams and attendees at the Candle of Hope ceremony, organisers of Relay for Life Clare told The Clare Echo.

Thousands of people from Clare and beyond participated in the twenty four hour relay which ran from 2pm on Saturday to 2pm on Sunday at Tim Smythe Park in the Fair Green, Ennis.

Over €50,00 has been raised as of Sunday evening with all funds yet to be counted, donations can still be made online via the link (click here to donate).

Organised in partnership with the Irish Cancer Society, Relay for Life raises funds for cancer research and support services. It also increases awareness on cancer and serves as a helpful outlet for affected families.

A lap by cancer survivors brought events to a start in Ennis with walkers, runners and motorcyclists among those to do laps of the Fair Green across the course of twenty four hours.

Teams and crews remembered loved ones lost to cancer and those who have overcome the illness or are currently battling it.

Kyle Frawley of Clare Community Games sang the national anthem while Ennis singer Damien Gormley was among the musical acts to take to the stage. St Michael’s Villas choir brought proceedings to an end with a selection of songs.

Scout groups from Cratloe, Ennis, Ennistymon, Newmarket-on-Fergus, Ruan and Shannon also played an integral part in assisting on the set-up of the event and also offering support to walkers and runners.
