THE FATHER of seven year old Clonlara student Shay (James) Lynch said โwe will forever love you. You will always be forever our beautiful boy Shay-Shayโ.
Addressing mourners at his sonโs funeral mass at St Senanโs Church in Clonlara on Wednesday, James Lynch said โTo Shay-Shay – our amazing little boy. From your first breath, we have loved you so much with all of our heartsโ.
A first class pupil at Scoil Seanรกin Naofa, Clonlara, Shay died following a tragic accident at a Killaloe hotel pool on Saturday while attending a party at the hotel.
At his funeral mass today, James said that he would complete the playhouse that Shay had started work on โjust the way you wanted itโ.
Addressing โShay-Shayโ, James said, โThank you for all the lovely pictures and lovely notes that you have left on our pillows as surprises for us – we will cherish everyone of themโ.
He said, โYou were such a gentle, caring, sweet boy who wouldnโt harm a flyโ. He said, โThank you for loving me, your Mommy, and big sister and friend, Abi. Your favourite teddy Dougie is in safe hands now with Abiโ.
James said, โYou were such an amazing artist and so creative in every way. I have even in the past sent your god-father John some of your pictures – I was that proud of youโ. James said, “I will miss you coming to work with me and how you loved putting on your little works-pants and pencil over your ear.”
โI promise that I will never leave the first piece of timber you cut for your playhouse a few weeks away from us with the lovely pictures you drew on themโ.
He said, โAbi and I will finish yeโre playhouse the way you wanted itโ.
“I know you always said that you would like to be a builder like me and you already had your apprenticeship started and you would have been a great one. I know that you have been so happy to have your Mommy as secretary in your school these past few months. We were so proud of the amazing reports from your teachers.โ
James said, โWe know that you are safe now and at peace with your Nana Christinaโฆ.We will forever miss you – we will forever love you. You will always be forever our beautiful boy Shay-Shayโ.
Earlier, James had helped carry his sonโs white coffin to the top of the church and briefly kissed the photo of his son in his Clonlara colours as he comforted daughter Abi.
In the packed Church parents comforted their small children as Fr Pat Mulcahy said last weekend was joyful as 41 local children celebrated their Confirmation and three baptisms took place in the parish while locals looked forward to the โepicโ hurling match between Clare and Limerick.
Fr Muclahy recalled meeting Shayโs mother, Tania at the Confirmation service on Saturday โand we went about our respective businesses. Just another dayโ.
He said, โThat evening a dark cloud had descended on our parish community as information disseminated through social media regarding the sad news which stopped all of us in our tracksโ.
He said, โOur young, vibrant Shay had left us. The storm clouds of panic and disbelief had truly invaded our hearts and souls โsurely this cannot be?’ A seven year old full of the fullness of life – out for a day of enjoyment – he never came homeโ.
Fr Mulcahy said that two weeks ago Shay planted two shrubs at the grave of his Nana Christina at Bridgetown cemetery.
Fr Mulcahy said that Shay was so happy he did that “and little did we or he know that he would be laid to rest where he planted that shrub beside his Nana where he will remain forever youngโ.
Fr Mulcahy said that James told him that when asked what she liked about her brother, Abi replied โI love everything about himโ.
In a reference to the grief that has enveloped the community since the weekend, Fr Mulcahy paid tribute to the work of the local school and support systems โthat came to the rescueโ.
Later before mass ended, Fr Mulcahy told the packed Church โwhen we have an unexpected tragedy in our midst we can sometimes blame ourselves”.
He said, โWe can carry guilt and feelings of remorse and we may say to our inner selves โwhy?โ There are so many โwhyโs?โ and so many โif onlys’ and we need to forgive ourselves too and seek healing of memoriesโ.
He said, “If our hearts are troubled because of events out of our control, we should seek help, talk to a friend or a counsellor – there is help available so we pray for healing of memories and peace of mindโ.
Earlier in momentos brought to the altar, his aunt Caroline said that Shayโs under 9 coach at Clonlara GAA, Joe Moriarty and his son, James brought up a Clonlara club jersey and his hurley and Shay โwas so proud to be part of the best hurling club in Clareโ.
Shayโs big sister, Abi โwho he adoredโ, and his cousin Cory brought up his โbeloved Dougieโ teddy and some of his favourite toys.
Shayโs cousin, Craig brought up Shayโs work pants, pencil and tools โa symbol of all the great times that Shay had working with his amazing Dadโ, according to Caroline. Two other cousins, Ruth and Alfie brought up โsome of Shayโs amazing art work which brought him so much joy and his favourite treat from Nanny – Oreo cookiesโ.
Another cousin, Cathal brought up Shayโs school jumper, Scoil Seanรกin Naofa as Caroline said that Scoil Seanรกin Naofa โwas a place of joy, friendship and laughter for Shay and the Lynch familyโ.
Shay Lynch was later laid to rest in St Thomas’s Church grounds, Bridgetown.
