ONE third of vehicles broken into in Co Clare are unlocked.

An Garda Síochána have renewed their appeal to the public to be more careful when it comes to protecting their car.

Latest data from Gardaí in Clare have detailed that 33 percent of vehicles broken into are unlocked at the time. Of the thefts, 22 percent occur at residential locations while over half take place during the hours of 12am to 7am.

Crime prevention officer, Sergeant Triona Brooks told The Clare Echo, “We want to remind car owners to secure all doors and windows and use your car alarm if there is one, take valuable property with you and do not leave valuable property on view inside the car. Park in well-lit and secure areas. Store your keys safely away from windows and letterboxes”.

This reminder comes following an incident in Bunratty on Friday (November 12th). Between 4:20pm and 5:40pm, the rear window of a car parked in the Meadows and Byrne car park was smashed and a gold overnight bag was stolen.
