LAHINCH GOLF CLUB captured two prestigious Provincial golf titles last weekend.
The Clare club qualified for the All-Ireland Fred Daly Cup final following great victories in the Provincial semi-final and final at Doneraile in Cork.
A 3/2 win over Castletroy in the morning semi-final was followed by victory over Limerick in the afternoon’s final for the Kevin Glynn managed side.
They are through to the national final which will be played at Donabate in August.
The team members are Danny Lyne who is competing in the South of Ireland this week, Cathal McNulty, Niall Kelly, Michael McMahon and Kieran Hennegan.
The ladies team also won Provincial honours at the weekend when they captured the Munster senior cup at Tralee. In the semi-final on Saturday they defeated Castletroy and followed this on Sunday with victory over Tralee.
The team is managed by Valerie Shannon and Aedin McCarthy and the members are Niamh O’Dwyer, Sarah Cunningham, Chloe Ryan, Olivia Lucas and Aideen Walsh. They will compete for All-Ireland honours at Douglas in Cork at the end of August
Shannon Golf Club:
Big numbers were the order of the day for Shannon Golf Club’s open week of competitions which included, singles, foursomes and team events.
Winners in the team of four were John Gubbins (20), Michael Mulcahy (9), Malcolm Simpson (22) and Liam Hogan (10) with 91 points. They had two to spare over Michael P. O’Connor (9), Paul Ruschitzkp (11), Robert Fleming (18) and Paul Dillon (18).
The team of four rumble was won by Thomas Purtill (14), Eoin Collins (6), Derek Enright (11) and Jamie O’Gorman (6) with 108 points. They were three ahead of Colm (1), Seamus (12) and Eoghan Hanley (14) and Frank Mitchel (28).
Third place was filled by Madge (10) and Rob Young (15), Fiona (4) and Darcy Corbett with 102.
The men’s team of three champagne scramble was won by Michael Hickey (15), John Burns (19) and Brendan Fitzgerald (19) with 81 and they were followed by Conor McMahon (12), Kevin Fennessy (9) and David Ryan (11) with 76.
In a men’s open singles on July 11 the winner was Kevin McCarthy (6) with 42 points and he won on a countback from Jack Ryan (14) with third place filled by Damian McGettigan on 39 followed by Jamie O’Gorman, also with 39. John Dolan (+6) won the gross with 38 points.
A similar competition on July 18 was won by Jamie O’Gorman (9) with 44 points. He was one better than Kevin Lambe (20) with Kevin O’Loughllin (26) in third place with 42 points followed by Eoghan Corry (13) with 39 points and Niall Murphy (24) with 38 points; Damian Casey (+1) won the gross with 38 points.
Padraig McGill (14) won the open singles on July 13 with 41 points from Don O’Shea (13) with 40 points, Jeff Carew (15) with 40, Derek Sweeney (6) with 40 and James Kierans (20) with 40. Dara Casey (+1) won the gross.
The two man scramble was won by Sean Óg Murnane and Aidan McInerney Hayes with 62 from Paul O’Connor and Joe Finlay, also with 72 with third place filled by Michael Keaarney and Ray Kiely who also had 62.
Michelle Pyke and William O’Brien won the mixed foursomes with 46 from Gerard and Louise Butler with 39 with John Hartery and Hilary Clein in third place, also with 39.
The winners of the seniors team of four competition were Damian Regan (14) Thomas O’Dea (12), William O’Brien (20) and Sean McLoughlin (24) with 108.
The three person full scramble on Saturday last was won by Colin Guilfoyle, Darragh Jones and Sean Arthur with 54 and they were two ahead of Paul O’Brien, Ben and Kevin Moylan. Daithi and Darragh Lohan and Eoghan Casey were third, also with 56 followed by Albert Carew, Michael Collins and Gerard Kelly on 58, with fifth place filled by Aidan O’Neill, Nigel Bourke and Patrick O’Donovan on 58. Jason O’Donnell, Niall Fitzgerald and Damian Casey on 59 won the gross.
The minor and intermediate scratch cups were played for on Sunday, Eamon Carroll (21) won the minor competition with 88 from Patrick Corcoran (19) with 93 while Gerry Dunne (25) won the nett with 68.
The intermediate scratch cup was won by Robbie Corry (11) with 76 from Frank Casey (10) with 79 and Pat Brennan (11) with 80. Jack Ryan (14) won the nett with 67.
There were a number of ladies competitions in recent weeks which produced some good scores.
The Gort na Vogue ladies singles was won by Áine Twomey (8) with 36 points from Mary Flynn (25) with 35 points. Laura O’Brien (9) with 25 points won the gross.
The two person scramble was won by Noeleen Neylon and Emma O’Halloran with 64 nett.
The M&G Transport singles was won by Sandra Ferguson (23) with 36 points.
The team of 3 Champagne scramble was won by Noeleen Neylon, Emma O’Halloran and Jean Murphy with 67 points .
Pauline Nally (18) won last week’s singles with 39 points from Mary Whelan (30) with 33 points. The gross was won by Noeleen Neylon (8) with 25 points.
Woodstock Golf Club:
The weekend’s club singles at Woodstock was won by Gary Thompson (14) with 42 points. Ray Casey (3) won the gross with 35 points.
Category 1 was won by Cathal O’Neill (10) with 38 points from Rob Cantwell (6) with 36 points.
Category 2 was won by Ross Kenny (11) with 40 points from Tony Neville (14) with 38 points. Category 3 was won by Aaron Lavery (24) with 40 points.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Bryan Clune (8th hole) and Rob Cantwell (14th hole).
Last week’s open singles at Woodstock was won by Niall O’Donohue (18) with 44 points and he had three to spare over John Baker (19). Thirty four played in the competition.
Ronan Horgan was a winner in the 2’s competition, scoring at the 4th hole.
The winners of the Holly’s Haven Pharmacy mixed scramble on Thursday were Vinny McInerney, Mags Nash and Johnny Clune from Michael Canty, Kathleen McEnery, Mary Holland and Liam O’Connor.
The competition this week will be the Specsavers, Ennis July medal which will be a stroke competition.
Captain Gerry O’Malley’s prize will take place on August 1, 2, 3 and the timesheet is now open.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The Rush Cups mixed foresomes at Kilrush last week was won by Christopher Breen and Maureen Kinnerk with 65 and they won by virtue of a better back six holes from Bernard Coleman and Helen Hurst who also had 65. Paul and Laura McGibney were third with 66 while the gross was won by Pat and Anne Brennan with 83.
The Kilrush Credit Union open singles at the weekend was won by Neil Browne (7) with 3 up from Thomas Coffey (14) with 1 up with third spot filled by Ruairi Young (8), also with 1 up, Tom Browne (3) won the gross with 4 down.
East Clare Golf Club:
Last week’s ladies 18 hole stableford competition at East Clare was won by Deirdre Tuohy (39) with 35 points one more than Catherine Minogue (23).
Winners of the ladies Wednesday competition were Margaret Egan, Siobhan Mulcahy, Phil Burke and Brid Hayes with second place filled by Mary Collins, Connie McKenna and Liz McMahon.
Dominic Stuart (21) won the men’s July medal with 63, four ahead of Richard Hayes (14) with Niall Melody (4) in third place with 68. Tony Cleary (-1) won the gross with 71.
The men’s open stableford competition was won by John Nihill (19) with 42 points, two ahead of Ger Hoey (19). John Cleary (21) was third with 39 points while the gross was won by Anthony Sweeney (-1) with 74.
The winners of last week’s senior mens competition were Kieran McNamara, Donal Fleming and John Nihill from Tom Larkin, Pat McMahon and Danny Minogue with third place filled by Michael Heffernan, Tadhg Murphy and Noel Earley.
The winners of the Friday mixed scramble were Margaret MacNamara, Sean Jones and Brian Torpey from Brid Hayes, Jamie Lynch, Stephen Moloney and Jim Lynch with third place filled by Michael Heffernan, Jim Bradley and Mary Collins.
East Clare golf club is holding an Open week from July 28 to August 4.
Dromoland Golf Club:
Seamus Cusack won the men’s blue tee stroke competition at Dromoland with 69, two ahead of George Smith with the gross going to Brian Shally on 74.
Ronan O’Sullivan was the winner off the white tees with 76 and he won on a countback from Alan White.
The ladies 9 hole weekly competition was won by Katrina O’Neill with 19 points.
Ennis Golf Club:
The ladies 18 hole stroke July medal competition saw Patricia Moroney (17) win the silver medal with 72 nett from Suzanne Deane (14) who had a similar score.
The bronze medal was won by Maureen Lynch (36) with 68 nett from Nuala Healy (25) with 70.
The 9 hole stableford competition was won by Martina Corbett (16) with 21 points from Gwen Culligan (23) who also scored 21 points.
Anne Kelly (12) with 14 points won division 1, Josephine Tone (17) won division 2 with 18 points and Therese Lillis (24) with 20 points won division 3.
The winners of the senior men’s three ball scramble were Padraig Cusack, Terry Hughes and Jim Hennessey with 47.4 points followed by Fintan Mc Evoy, Don Ryan and Pat Rutherford with 47.6. In third place with 47.8 were Pat G McInerney, Ger O Brien and Gerry Kelly. Fourth spot was filled by Pat Murphy, Peadar Cosgrove and Sean Fitzpatrick with 48.0 with fifth spot filled by Ollie O Loughlin, Brian Tuohy and Michael Cusack with 48.1.
Friday’s open singles was won by Cormac O’Neill (15) with 39 points from John M. McCarthy (17) from Dromoland G.C with 37 points. The gross was won by Jason Considine with 36 points.
The men’s competition at the weekend was a scotch foursomes for he Paddy Con trophy. It was won by Patrick Cuddy and Vincent Neylon with 48 points and they were two ahead of Flan Downes and Barry Lee.
In third place on 43 points were Gerry O’Connor and Sean Rynne followed by Keith Hassett and Brendan Nevin on 42 with Raymond Power and Tommy Stack on 40.
Gort Golf Club:
The men’s 18 hole singles stableford competition at Gort at the weekend, sponsored by Sullivans Royal Hotel was won by Keelan McNamee E(13) with 44 points.
The category winners were James Moran (6) with 35 points, Mike O’Connor (15) with 39 points and Cathal Mongan (19) with 37 points.
Gerry Glynn’s captain’s prize concluded on Sunday with victory going to Gerry Broderick (20) with 130 from Michael Ryan (20) with 131. Third place was filled by Noel O’Shaughnessy (11) with 132 followed by Micheal Cahill (17) also with 132 and Noel Forde (25) on 133.
The gross was won by Joe Moran (2) with 71.
Other prize winners were John Daly (27) 66 (Nett), Niall Finnegan (16) 137 (past captain) and Frank Higgins (19) 144 (seniors).
Category 1 was won by Colman Cooney (11) with 134, category 2 by Kenneth Corless (19) with 137 and category 3 by Martin Whelan (24) with 145.
The beginners 9 hole scramble was won by Patrick Baker, Donal Healy, James Fennell and Ronan Keane.
Gerry Glynn’s captain’s prize to the ladies was won by Siobhan Forde
(11) with 42 points from Geraldine Connors (19) with 41 points. Mary Kelly (24) was third with 36 points followed by Teresa Kavanagh (23) with 35 points. The gross was won by Sara Broderick (19) with 22 points.
Friday’s open 18 hole singles stableford was won by Matthew Kiernan (29) with 47 points with Jack Losty (4) winning the gross with 32 points.
Kildysart Golf Society:
Following their recent outing to Oughterard the members of the Kildysart golf society will make the short journey to Kilush this Sunday, July 27, for the annual Vincent Ward Memorial challenge.
New members and guest golfers of all ages and abilities are always welcome.
