LADY captain’s (Mary Curley) prize to the men was played for at Ennis last week when John McEntee (21) emerged as the winner of the 18 hole strokeplay competition with 66.
He won by a stroke from Ciaran Toohey (17) with John McInerney (24) in third place with 69 followed by Tony Lawlor (14) with 70. Jason Considine won the gross with 73. The category winners were Enda Heaney (10) with 68, Mark Kenny (16) with 69, John Brack (19) with 72 and William Moloney (31) with 69.
Meanwhile captain John Coleman’s prize to the ladies was won by Bridget Hoey (23) with 73 nett. She won by a stroke from Jean Moloney (30) with Patrice Ryan (37) in third place with 74.
Mary Lenihan (15) won the gross with 89 while the category winners were Ann O’Loughlin (18) with 75 nett, Maureen Lynch (39) with 75 nett and Sinead O’Sullivan (43) with 70 nett.
In the 9 hole competition Mary McGrath Fahy (28) was the winner with 35 from Celia Reilly (18) with 37 while Anna Glynn (18) won the gross with 55
The weekly ladies competition was an 18 hole singles stableford event which was won by Rose Enright (21) with 40 points and she had two to spare over Helen Gallery (24). Third place with 37 points was Suzanne Deane (13) followed by Joan Murphy (32) with 33 points
The 9 hole competition was won by Mary Walshe (19) with 19 points while the category winners were Sinéad Hegarty (9) with 16 points, Mary O’Halloran (18) with 17 points and Liz Kelly (23) with 17 points.
Tuesday’s senior ladies outing was won by Carmel Verling and Judith Brazil with 60.7 from Phil Butler and Brid Cunningham with 60.8. Thursday’s senior men’s competition was a team of four with two scores to count and sixty eight members played.
The winners were Pat Murphy, John Gavin, John Lillis and Michael Cusack with 76 points and they had four to spare over Vincent Corbett, Ollie Kennelly, Frank Coffey and John Vaughan. In third place, also with 72 points, were Cyril Lyons, Damon Murphy, Michael Kerin and Jimmy Kearns followed by Ronnie Guinnane, John R Ryan, Frank Cullinan and Michael Clancy who also scored 72 points.
Fifth spot was filled by Liam Barry, Conor Murphy, Sean Fitzpatrick, and Peadar Cosgrove with 70 points followed by Steve Burns, Terry Hughes, Willie Moloney and Paul Mockler with 69, Johnny Kearse, Matt Flynn, Fintan McEvoy and Gerry Scanlan, also wth 69 while Tony Lawler, Tim Scanlon, Willie Donnellan and Seamus Bowe were next with 68 points.
Thirty three golfers took part in the Friday open singles which was won by Simon Daly (21) with 47 points. David Rushe (9) was second with 39 points followed by Geoffrey O’Toole (15), also with 39 points.
In the inter club competition, Ennis lost by two holes to Shannon in the Barton shield while there was also disappointment for the junior cup team who lost to Dromoland at Shannon on a 3.5 to 1.5 scoreline.
Kilrush Golf Club:
The men’s competition at Kilrush at the weekend was the Whelan’s Garage open singles
Patrick Coleman (15) captured the honours with 41 points, one more than Des Murphy (26) with Mark Cottam (19) a point further back on 39 in third place.
Tom Clancy (0) won the gross with 36 points while the category winners were Terry O’Hare (10) with 37 points, John Sherin (17) with 39 points and Pat Murtagh (20) with 37 points. The nines were won by Sean Moran (25) with 22 points and Michael Studdert (14) with 21 points.
The Shannonside club fundraiser team of 3 was won by Thomas Downes, Alan F Howard and Geremiah Brennan with 72 points. They had three to spare over Pat Mulcahy, Gerard McInerney and James Collins won on a countback from Brendan Carey, Pat and Agnes Shannon.
In fourth place with 68 points were Michael Shannon Snr, Celia O’Grady and Pat Mulcahy followed by Dominic Enright, Brian Scanlan and Malcolm McCarthy with 67 points. The best all ladies team award was won by Mary Downes, Edel Crowley and Fiona Kinsella with 59 points.
Winner of the ladies competition, sponsored by West Clare Physical Therapy, was Celia O’Grady (30) with 62 nett, followed by Mary O’Sullivan (29) with 68 nett. In third place was Carmel O’Flaherty (49) with 68 followed by Anne Cooper (37) with 71. Anne Marie Donnellan (14) won the gross with 86. The nines were won by Imelda Griffin (52) with 32 nett and Sheila O’Grady (19) with 34.5 nett.
Dromoland Golf Club:
The men’s competition at Dromoland at the weekend was v par and was won by Niall Geragthy with 5 up, one better than second placed Diarmuid O’Connor with Patrick McCoy one further back on 3 up.
Niall Woods won the gross with 3 up while Noel McMahon won the category for handicappers 20 and over with 1 up.
The mid week 9 hole competition was won by Patrick McCoy with 23 points from Diarmuid McMahon with 22 points with Anthony Kelly in third place with 20 points.
Leslie O’Flynn won the ladies 18 hole strokeplay competition from Mairead Twomey with Cora O’Toole in third place while Julie Fitzgerald won the gross.
East Clare Golf Club:
Winners of the ladies team of two competition at East Clare on Sunday were Geraldine Finnegan and Deirdre O’ Neill with 52 points and they had one to spare over Geraldine Finnegan and Maria Kennedy.
The ladies weekly competition was won by Celia Moloney, Amanda Dalton and Noreen Doyle from Margaret Lynch, Mary Stritch and Collette Ward with third place filled by Mary Jo Minogue, Connie McKenna and Kay Grimes.
The men’s singles stableford competition on Sunday was won by Seamus Mason (18) with 47 points, two more than Kieran McNamara (35). In third place with 43 points was Michael McInerney (22) while the gross was won by Eoin Magill with 70. The birdie competition winner was Richard Hayes.
Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Danny Minogue, Willie Roche and Nick Ryan from Pat McNamara, Brian Torpey and Steve Lynch with third place filled by Tom Larkin, Kieran McNamara and Jim Lynch.
Woodstock Golf Club:
Brian Mulcahy (18) won the weekend’s club singles at Woodstock with 41 points while Lucas Kelly (3) won the gross with 33 points.
Category 1 (0-10) was won by Ken Horgan (9) with 41 points from Cian Ruane (8) with 38 points. Category 2 (11 to 18) was won by Pat Solon (18) with 38 points from Paudie O’Connell (16) with 37 points while category 3 (19 and over) was won by Kenneth Fielding (20) with 39 points.
Winners in the 2’s competition were Tony Coote (6th hole), Dickie Pyne (6th hole) and Ronan O’Looney (8th hole).
Winners in the HolmPatrick cup qualifier in aid of Vision Ireland were Gerry Kelly (10) and Noel Moloney (11) with 50 points. They move onto the Munster Regional final to be played in Woodstock on August 12.
Former Kilmaley and Clare hurler Alan Markham (3) was the winner of last week’s open singles at Woodstock with 42 points. Ian Myatt (10) with David O’Brien (16) a further two points back on 38 points in third spot.
Last week’s ladies singles was won by Marianne McGough with 30 points. The ladies 18 hole stableford competition was won by Kathleen McEnery with 33 points and she had one to spare over Deirdre Molyneaux
Holly’s Haven Pharmacy will sponsor Woodstock’s new Friday evening mixed 9 hole series which got underway last Friday when the winners were John Clune, Kevin Burke, Mary Morgan and Edel Burke with 22 points
Members wishing to play can attend from 5.15p.m on Friday evenings for this social event. The formats will be different from week to week until the nights draw in. and a social night is being planned at the end of the series.
The open singles continue on this Thursday evening while the weekend competition will be a club singles
The mixed fourball team commenced the defence of their all Ireland title with a 3/1 win over East Clare in East Clare.
The Woodstock panel comprises Eilis Neville, Mary McNamara, Margarte Ann Killeen, Hannah O’Brien, Mary Howard, Anne Marie Russell, Ollie Mc Namara, Michael Canty, Mike Kelly, John O’Connor, Pat O’Brien and Paddy Meehan.
The Junior cup team recorded a 4/1 win over Kilrush in Kilrush on Saturday and the panel included Bernardo Kelly, Rob Cantwell, Lucas Kelly, Aidan Mulcahy, Matthew Mc Grath, Justin Mc Grath and Ken Horgan.
The play in pink charity fundraiser at Woodstock was another huge success and organisers have expressed thanks to the players, those who sponsored prizes and donated money.
The ladies modified team of four was won by the all East Clare team of Rachel Whelan (16), Evelyn Skehan (18), Breeda Mc Carthy (30) and Maureen Clune (32) with 93 points. They had one to spare over the Dromoland team of Anne Kilker (34), Bridgette O’Keeffe(38), Loraine O’Sullivan (51) and Sinead Keogh (52).
In third place with 87 points were Chaye Kelly (8), Mary Mc Namara (20), Eilis Neville (22) and Marie McNamara (37).
Winners of the 9 hole competition were Cliona Cleary, Helen O’Neill, Assumpta Murray and Edel O’Callaghan with 42 points.
The winners of the men’s modified team of four were the Woodstock team of Jason Dormer (3), Mark Hogan (7), Robbie Dormer (13) and Tony Coote (15) with 102 points and they won on a countback from another Woodstock team of Paddy Meehan (10), Brian Kilker (13), Dickie Pyne (16) and Eugene Conroy (23).
Third place was filled by a team from Lahinch comprising Pat O’Dwyer (11), PJ O’Neill (12), Matthew Griffin (14) and Michael O Brien (19) who had 99 points.
Lahinch Golf Club:
A number of Lahinch inter-club teams were in action over the past week The Pierce Purcell team, managed by Michael O’Riordan and John Skerritt Snr. defeated Ennis GC 3&1 to progress to the second round. The Barton Shield team defeated Woodstock GC by 11 holes to qualify for the West Munster finals at Limerick GC on July 12/13 while the Ladies’ Intermediate foursomes defeated Ennis GC in the first playoff hole to progress to the next round.
The Jimmy Bruen team lost out to Spanish Point at the second play-off hole. The senior men defeated Kilrush GC 3.5 to 1.5 in the Vincent Nevin Trophy with the deciding match coming down to the 18th hole to progress to the second round when they will have a home tie against Woodstock.
Sixmilebridge Golf Society:
Nenagh Golf Club was the venue for members of Sixmilebridge Golf Society last Saturday for their June outing. Strong winds made conditions difficult but Vinny Purcell battled his way to the top to claim the spoils.
He won the outing from Dermot McNamara with Stephen Mulready in third position followed by John Chaplin. The winners of the nines were David Purcell and Fergal Kennedy.
Gort Golf Club:
The men’s competition at Gort last weekend was for the Val Hoarty jug, an 18 hole stroke competition. The winner was Declan Grimes (16) with 64. The category winners were Bernard Byrne (12) with 66, Ronan Burke (15) with 66 and Tom Casey (29) with 75. The gross was won by Kris Finnegan (1) with 70. The Friday open 18 Hole singles was won by Daniel Gillespie (30) with 43 points.
