A man in his thirties has been arrested following a serious assault in Ennis on Thursday evening.

Gardaí have confirmed that they have arrested one man aged in his thirties, he had been detained at Shannon Garda Station.

It follows an assault in The Market on Thursday evening which has left one woman in a critical condition at University Hospital Limerick.

He is due to appear before a special sitting of Ennis District Court on Saturday morning at 11am.

Two units of the Clare County Fire and Rescue Service along with An Garda Síochána and ambulance paramedics were called to the scene on Thursday evening shortly after 6pm.

An area of Upper Market Street had been sealed off as part of the Gardaí’s investigation. The indoor carpark of the Market Building and the public toilet where the woman was found were also preserved as part of the investigation.

As part of their investigations, Gardaí are appealing for anybody who may have witnessed this incident or were in the Market area of Ennis between 5.30pm and 6.30pm to contact them. Any road users, particularly those with camera footage are asked to contact the Incident Room at Ennis Garda Station on 065 6848100 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
