*New speed bump on pedestrian crossing at Barry’s Cross in Ardnacrusha.

Fianna Fáil local election candidate Rachel Hartigan is calling for lighting and adequate infrastructure to be installed at the recently raised pedestrian crossing at Barry’s Cross, Ardnacrusha.

Until recently, this crossing was a flat one – which Hartigan has lobbied for to be raised. Now, there is a need for additional work to be carried out on the crossing to ensure it is safe for all users.

“I was delighted to see last week that the pedestrian crossing at Barry’s Cross now has a speed bump on it,” said Hartigan.

“This is something that was certainly needed – this crossing was flat, with no slope down from the footpath to the crossing, making it very difficult for people with mobility issues, or those with buggies and so on to get up and down.

“I’m pleased to see that the raising has taken place so it’s now level with the path, making it a better solution for pedestrians but also helping with road safety for drivers in the area.

Hartigan continued: “However, it’s now vital that the remaining required works that are outstanding are carried out promptly.

“There needs to be adequate lighting and painted markings on the road, so that motorists familiar with the area will realise that a change has taken place.

“The improvements carried out at this crossing are fantastic to see – but it’s essential now that the job is quickly finished and I’ll be liaising with the council on this to ensure that it is the case.”
