A SECOND advisory notice not to swim at a Clare beach has been issued in the space of two days, this time for Kilkee.

Spanish Point since Wednesday is under an advisory notice not to swim at the location and on Thursday the same restriction has been introduced for Kilkee.

Clare County Council “until further notice” are advising the public not to swim at Kilkee. The restriction has been introduced after the results of routine bathing water samples showed elevated levels of bacteria.

“Run-off from the catchment after exceptionally heavy rainfall is a likely cause of the elevated levels of bacteria in the water,” a spokesperson for the local authority said.

Kilkee has previously been hit with swim bans in 2019, 2021 and 2022.

In accordance with An Taisce’s Blue Flag programme, the Blue Flag at Kilkee will be removed until such time as the water quality improves.
