A West Clare representative has encouraged Clare County Council to accelerate plans for road works in Kilkee as visitor numbers to the popular coastal spot increase.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have approved a preferred design for Minster Place in Kilkee. Detailed design, the feasibility report and a preliminary design report have been advanced and are to be submitted to the TII in the second quarter of this year, senior executive engineer in the road design office, John Gannon outlined.

His comments came in response to Cllr Gabriel Keating (FG) who requested an update on planned improvements “to enhance the flow of traffic on the N67”.

Speaking at a recent meeting of the West Clare Municipal District, Cllr Keating set the scene of traffic coming from the rescue centre and also from the direction of the strand, “there are five roads and it is quite dangerous”.

Cllr Keating encouraged the local authority to complete works before the summer season. “Hopefully it will be very busy with staycations in the summer,” he added.

Pedestrian traffic at the location “cannot be underestimated,” Cllr Cillian Murphy (FF) flagged as he seconded the proposal.
