Repeated calls for increased parking at an โ€œold estateโ€ in Newmarket-on-Fergus have been made.

Cutting into the green area outside Glencragga in Newmarket-on-Fergus has been suggested as one potential way to increase the amount of parking for residents in the estate.

For the second time in the space of ten months, Cllr Pat McMahon (FF) submitted a motion to the Shannon Municipal District asking for the provision of additional parking for Glencragga residents โ€œdue to inadequate parking spaces within the estateโ€. His bid was seconded by Cllr John Crowe (FG).

โ€œLimited optionsโ€ exist when it comes to securing additional spaces, senior executive engineer Tom Mellett responded. โ€œIt would require a setback from the road edge into the green area to achieve any substantial gain for parking, this would not achieve parking in the immediate vicinity of houses 1 through 12. Further engagement with the local community would be required before implementing any changesโ€.

Speaking at a meeting of the Shannon MD, Cllr McMahon described Glencragga as โ€œa very old estate in Newmarket-on-Fergus on the Ennis side. Cars were a very small item in our lives when this estate was built in the 1950s, attitude and time moves on, parking is becoming a problemโ€.

Instead of interfering with the green area, the long-standing councillor suggested the back entrance to the estate be examined to alleviate some concerns. โ€œIt is a difficult situation and finding a solution will be difficult,โ€ he acknowledgedโ€.
