A final draft of the Shannon Town Centre Masterplan is to be placed on public display by the end of the year.

Friday (September 3rd) was the closing date for submissions from members of the public, stakeholders, residents and business groups on the draft Shannon Town Centre Masterplan.

In the seven weeks of consultation (16th July, 2021, to 3rd September, 2021), there were over 8,000 page views, 152 registrations and over 2,000 visitors to the public consultation portal, in addition to the many callers to the public offices of Clare County Council.

Over 30 submissions and 94 online surveys were received on the public consultation and Brian McCarthy, Senior Planner, Clare County Council, has thanked everyone for their engagement and contributions to the proposed Masterplan.

He acknowledged the positive content, quality and level of detail of the submissions. The Council’s planning team are now reviewing and assessing every submission. Over the coming weeks, the planning team will assess each submission to guide and inform the final draft Masterplan.

Following consideration of all submissions, consultation with the Elected Members and environmental and economic appraisals, it is anticipated that the final draft Shannon Town Centre Masterplan will be placed on public display by the end of the year for a final round of public consultation.

€100,000 in funding been allocated for the plan under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF).

Mixed views had been expressed on initial aspects of the Masterplan. Cllr Gerry Flynn (IND) said of the proposals, “this is what I’d describe as a disgraceful plan” while CEO of Shannon Chamber, Helen Downes stressed its importance for the future of the town, “It is so important that we get the best plan for Shannon, one that everyone feels is appropriate for the town. Once that is in place, we can strive to achieve the vision of a new Shannon for the betterment of the town, the county and the region”.
