THERE was an excellent turnout of over 200 golfers over the Easter weekend to play in Ennis Golf Club’s 18 hole and 9 hole competitions in aid of Cahercalla Community Care.
The charity golf tournament raised €2,700 to help purchase a new transport bus for the Nursing Home.
In the men’s section the winner was Brian Tuohy (31) with 46 points from Barry Casey (21) from Blessington Lakes golf club who had 40 points.
Geraldine O’Rourke (29) won the ladies section with 39 points from Ann Pyne Gallery (32) with 37 points.
The winner of the 9 hole competition was Leo Herbert (7) with 18 points.
In April 2025 Cahercalla celebrated its 30th Anniversary as Ireland’s first community owned hospital. Its existence and indeed future is only possible through the steadfast kindness and generosity of our community and the support of clubs like Ennis Golf Club.
The Abbey cup qualifier, an 18 hole singles stroke play competition was the competition at Ennis last week from which the top sixteen nett scores qualified for matchplay.
The winner was Fergus O’Brien (20) with 64 from Evan Lewis (18) with 68 with third spot filled by T J. Scanlan (12) with 68. They were followed by Michael M Vaughan (20) – 68, James P. Horgan (25) – 68, Seamus McEnery (5) – 68, Brian Kelly (8) – 68, Enda Burns (22) – 68, Gerard O’Brien (13) – 68, Ross McLoughlin (19) – 68, P.J Hehir (35) – 69, Michael Meagher (9) – 70, Joe O’Connor (35) – 70, Joseph O’Brien (15) – 71, Kieran Fox (3) – 71 and John Brack (20) – 71.
The ladies April medal/Ardagh cup competition, an 18 hole singles strokeplay competition took place last week. In the silver medal category Mary Lenihan (16) won with 70 from Ann A. Gallery (11) with 73. The bronze medal section was won Peggy Costello (25) with 71 from Nualla D’Auria (44) with 71.
In the 9 hole singles Josephine Toney (20) was the overall winner with 24 while Division 2 was won by Mary Woulfe (15) with 21 with Division 3 honours going to Lorraine Barry (21) with 19 points.
The senior men had an outing to Loughrea last week when the winners were Ger O Brien, John Gavin and Ronnie Guinnane. With 92 points from Peter Quinn, Michael Neylon, Michael Irwin, and Noel Connellan with 90 points.
They were followed by Liam McCannon, Don Ryan, Damon Murphy and Joe O Brien with 89, Tommy Timpson, Pat P McInerney, Brian Considine and Dave Boylan. Michael Dempsey, Declan Hanley, Frank Cullinan with 88, Pat Murphy, John Lillis, Frank Coffey, Michael Cusack with 87.
The senior ladies trip to Gort was won by Geraldine O’Mahoney, Maureen Molony and Maureen Lynch from Maeve O’Grady, Eileen Holly and Bernie Brooks with third spot filled by Mary Curley, Alice D’Arcy and Anne Kelly followed by Carmel Verling, Ann Fealy and Brid Cunnigham.
The Friday open singles was won by Frank Owens (17) with 43 points from Rose Enright (22) with 40 points while the gross was won by Martin O’Neill (3) with 36 points,
Woodstock Golf Club:
Last Sunday saw the final of the ladies Spring League at Woodstock played over nine holes.
In a close encounter Ramona Gleeson and Siobhan Maher were victorious over Eilis Neville and Orla Cullinane.
The April medal saw category 0 to 20 won by Chaye Kelly with 81 nett while Anne Kilker with 71 nett won the category for those over 20 handicap.
This week’s ladies singles was won by Mary Gleeson with 38 points from Siobhan Maher with 37 points.
The captain’s (Gerry O’Malley) fourball at Woodstock was won by Paul Coote and Adrian Kearney with 52 points from John Baker and Adrian Lavery with 47 followed by Alan Frawley and Kenneth Warren with 46.
The May Bank holiday open singles was won by Martin Mungovan (19) with 43 points from Ross Kenny (14) with 42 and P J Carmody with 40 points.
East Clare Golf Club:
In the ladies Australian Spoons competition at East Clare last week the winners were Maria Kennedy and Geraldine Finnegan with 43 points. In second place were Catherine Minogue and Marie Donnellan with 38 points. The gross was won by Siobhan Shanahan and Marie Donnellan.
Flannan McMahon (26.8) won the men’s open singles stroke competition on Sunday with 65 nett. In second place with a similar score was John G. Doyle (16.6\) followed by Alan O’Neill (18.7) with 69. Eoin Magill (-1.8) won he gross with 69. Birdie winners were Brian Muldoon and Sean Ahern.
The ladies Wednesday competition was won by Amanda Dalton, Brid Hayes, Mary Farrell and Breda O’Loghlin from Maureen Clune, Anne O’Grady and Mary Stillman. In third place were Helen Downey, Jenny Ryan and Mary Fitzgerald followed by Ursula Hogan, Mary Jo. Minogue and Mary Stritch.
Last week’s senior men’s competition was won by Eamonn Goode and Kevin Wallis from Danny Minogue and John Fielding with third place filled by Jim Greene and Seamus Whelan.
The Friday morning mixed scramble winners were Annette Rowan, Sean Jones and Willie Roche from Willie Hayes, Pat McNamara and Mary Farrell.
The ‘play in pink’ competition will take place on May 14th.
Lahinch Golf Club:
Last weekend, Kate Lanigan (Hermitage GC) won the ladies senior scratch cup (Vaughan Trophy) at Lahinch on a 36-hole score of -6 (142).
Ella Cantwell (Esker Hills GC) finished second, four shots behind with defending champion, Aideen Walsh, a further two shots back in third place.
On Sunday the boys Fred Daly team defeated Kilrush 3&2 on the Castle Course to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Kilrush Golf Club:
Michael Studdert (17) won the Tom Nolan Tyres open singles stableford competition at Kilrush with 46 points.
Tom O’Dea (40) was second with 41 points with third spot filled by Tom Dillon (13) with 40 points. Tom Clancy won the gross with 40
points.
The category winners were Gerard S Ryan (13) with 38 points, Pat J. Shannon (15) with 38 points and Michael J Hogan (21) with 39 points. The nines were won by David Browne with 21 points and Fergal O’Connor with 22 points.
The overall winner in the Golden Vale ladies 18 hole stableford competition was Edel Crowley (22) with 37 points while the categories were won by Anne Brennan (16) with 37 points, Mary G. Nolan (22) with 35 points and Mary Downes (31) with 35 points.
Dromoland Golf Club:
The 18 holes singles stableford competition at Dromoland at the weekend was won by Cillian O’Connor with 40 points, one more than Brian Shelly with Cathal Nolan, also with 39 in third spot.
Christy Cusack with 38 won the gross while category for handicappers of 20 and over was won by Thomas Spellissy with 38 points.
The midweek 9 hole competition was won by Patrick McCoy with 24 points from Gordon Daffy with 20 and Gordon Daffy also with 20. Lucy Burke Keogh won the ladies 9 hole competition with 20 points from Aislinn Keogh with 18.
