A 28-year old Dublin man appeared in court after being charged in connection with an alleged seizure of €620,000 worth of cannabis at Shannon Airport on Wednesday.

At Gort District Court on Thursday, Sean Grehan of Stradbrook Park, Blackrock, Dublin appeared in court after being charged with two alleged drugs offences arising from the airport seizure on Wednesday.

In court, Judge Alec Gabbett asked what was the estimated value of the drugs seized and Sgt Claire Henaghan said “€620,000 of cannabis”.

Solicitor, Olivia Lynch told Judge Gabbett that there would be no application for bail today but a bail application would be made on behalf of Mr Grehan on his next appearance in court.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Garda Kevin Molloy said that he arrested Mr Grehan at 6.10pm on Wednesday and at 6.20pm charged Mr Grehan with the two charges before the court and in response to caution and charge Mr Grehan made no reply.

In the case, Mr Grehan is charged with at Shannon Airport on November 12th having in his possession, cannabis for the purpose of sale or supply contrary to Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977.

Mr Grehan is also charged with having in his possession cannabis on November 12th at Shannon Airport contrary to Section 3 of the Misuse of Drugs Act.

Ms Lynch asked for a short remand in custody to allow the application for bail to be made at Mr Grehan’s next court appearance.

Judge Gabbett said that he could hear the bail application at Ennis District Court tomorrow, Friday November 14th.

He said, “I am always conscious that someone has to make a bail application and I don’t want them to be left in custody”.

Ms Lynch said that she has been in contact with Mr Grehan’s solicitor, Patricia Camilon at KOD Lyons in Dublin who will make the bail application on Mr Grehan’s behalf at the next court.

Mr Grehan told Judge Gabbett, “I have spoken to my solicitor and my solicitor is confident enough that she can sort it out”.

Ms Lynch said that Friday suits for Ms Camilon to attend court in Ennis.

Ms Lynchy said that Ms Camilon “wishes to speak to Mr Grehan’s family members in order to secure an independent surety to put forward to the court”.

Ms Lynch asked that she be granted legal aid for today’s court appearance after Mr Grehan confirmed to the court that he doesn’t work.

Judge Gabbett granted legal aid.

Judge Gabbett said that he would remand Mr Grehan in custody to Castlerea prison to appear at Ennis District Court for DPP directions and a bail application.

Judge Gabbett asked are there any issues relating to Mr Grehan that prison authorities should know about such as any medical attention required and Ms Lynch replied “no, he is all good”.
