ENNIS RESIDENTS have had to deal with “deplorable” water quality while waiting for mains rehabilitation work to take place.

Ongoing difficulties were referenced by Cllr Paul Murphy (FG) as he spoke of the strain dealt with by residents of Ard na Gréine, St Michael’s Villas and St Flannan’s Terrace regarding their water quality. He urged Irish Water and the Ennis Municipal District to come “to an agreeable compromise in order to facilitate the mains rehabilitation and road reinstatement works between Captain Mac’s Cross and Station Cross roundabout that were to be carried out during the Christmas holidays of last year”.

He said, “the quality of water in some dwellings is deplorable and has led to sickness and malfunctioning of dishwashers and washing machines”.

Discussions have continued between Irish Water and the water services of Clare County Council on the matter.

Acting senior executive engineer in the Ennis MD, Ian Chaplin advised that details relating to the programming, road reinstatement and timing for the works have to be finalised. “Ennis MD would like the works to be scheduled at a time that least inconveniences the public including local residents and commuters along the route as there would have to be road closures and diversions to allow the works to proceed”.

Dishwashers have become clogged as a result, Cllr Murphy stated. “The water can be deplorable at times I’m told,” the Clarecastle native outlined. “Expensive clothing” has also been destroyed, he highlighted.

Works between Captain Mac’s Cross and Station Rd roundabout must proceed, Cllr Pat Daly (FF) stressed. “It is not good enough for residents, I call on Irish Water to deal with it ASAP”.
