BOTH a commitment and timeline to provide the free HPV vaccine to younger people is required by the Department of Health, a Clare Senator has stressed.

At a “punitive” cost of €600 uptake of the HPV vaccine was labelled “off-putting” by Senator Martin Conway (FG), for persons that did not have the opportunity to avail of the vaccine administration when in school.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Ennistymon man outlined. “It is disappointing that today’s Women’s Health Action Plan contains just a mention of reviewing options for a HPV vaccine catch-up programme, with no action date for implementation. The action commits to a review of National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) advice on the clinical effectiveness and population wide benefit of providing the HPV vaccine to those who were eligible to receive it but missed or turned down the vaccine, which will inform the development of a potential ‘mop-up’ programme.

“This catch-up programme is something I have called for previously, as waiving costs for those who latterly avail of the HPV Vaccine will help boost take up and ultimately help in the elimination of cervical cancer,” Fine Gael’s spokesperson on Health in the Seanad added.

Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly (FF) recently confirmed in the Dáil that NIAC is considering the effectiveness of providing the HPV vaccine to girls and boys in secondary school who were eligible to receive HPV vaccine in 1st year but who did not receive it; and also to women up to 25 years who have left secondary school and who did not receive the vaccine when eligible.

Senator Conway believed this review needed to be completed “as soon as possible so we can provide the vaccine to as many young people as possible, with Ireland committed to achieving the WHO target of a 90% HPV vaccine uptake rate”.

He spoke of the tireless work of the late Laura Brennan and her Ennis family to advocate for the HPV vaccine. “The family of the late Laura Brennan continue to campaign tirelessly for the removal of these costs, and she continues to inspire the people of Clare as well as the entire country. We owe it to Laura and the many other women who have fought so bravely on this issue, to ensure we have the highest take up rate possible of the HPV vaccine in Ireland”.
