Sympathy has been expressed to the Powell and Hackett families following a tragic family death over the weekend.

A single vehicle collision in the early hours of Sunday morning on the R465 between Ardnacrusha and Broadford claimed the life of Michael Powell. He was the sole occupant in the car at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene after the vehicle left the road and struck a wall.

Crowds descended upon Truagh Catholic Church for the funeral mass on Wednesday afternoon with the burial taking place at Truagh Cemetery.

Cllr Michael Begley (IND) proposed a vote of sympathy to both the Powell and Hackett families at Monday’s adjourned meeting of Clare County Council. A small pool of water which caused flooding was what Begley believed caused the accident. “He has three young children and a wife left behind. His wife is one of the workers in our crèche,” the Clonlara representative said.

Gardai are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users with camera footage from the route near the time of the collision to contact them at Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
